Interesting thread. When I was about 31, a 19-year-old college student was hired in to work on my weekend. I went through the roof because she was inexperienced and "young"....I wanted no part of her on my shift. We ended up working really well together, I wrote the letter of recommendation that got her into graduate school. I moved on to another job in another state, but she is the one person who made a point out of keeping in touch with me over the years, and is one of my closest friends to this day. She actually now is head of the department we both used to work in all those years ago. Once I asked her why she always kept in touch and "liked me" so much, lol. She told me she had learned a lot from me and always respected me for going to bat for her when it was necessary, and, even though I was "older", she just enjoyed my company. Of course, she was always very mature for her age. Plus, now that I'm 49 and she's 36, the age difference just doesn't seem so great anymore.
