I seen a pop ed piece in our small town paper. Bashing the 80s. In part- cos the music wasnt like lenard skinnard, or even the beatles for that matter. punchline here- the writer was born in the 80s!!!! my point of view the 80s were an exciting time to be alive. we were exhuberant for winning the cold war- the country had everything going for it! being in my youth- i had my whole life in front of me. so in a way=- todays let down.... anyhow how do you view the 80s?

I recall teh news of Reagan being elected. My carpool pulled into my driveway from college. we looked at eachother. we thought there would be nuclear war!! as you recall- Iran held 51 American hostage for 444 days. It was quite a downer as a kid seeing the govt so helpless- and like it would never end. I flunked history in High School- but went to summer school- and rememeber THAT class prettty well.

One could say I grew up in the 80's. I graduated from high school and college while in the 80's. I was very happy to be out of both places. So as far as the time of my life goes, not so much. I personally knew and hung out with 804 of the 808 people I graduated with. They weren't such great People. In any event when I hear music of the 80's it does have me reminiscing a bit now and then. Seems that we Had socially conscious music back then. The country has sort of gone to hell since then. Even if that Were the very beginnings of such? You can think fond thoughts or not so fond with any decade.

I'm 40 yrs old & because of that fact... the years that molded me into an adult where the 80's The 80's were some very transitional times namely because of the explosion of technology that became readily available to the general public. Walkman radios, video games, calculators & digital watches. Television programming exploded & cable became available in areas that previously only had, at best, 3 grainy channels. MTV, HBO & then half way through the decade you could actually find something to watch late at night where traditionally you would find the national anthem played at about 2 am then followed by something that looked like a bullseye target accompanied by an annoying, continuous low tone sound. Music was all over the place... Folk still had a strong following. Punk was followed by pop... rock's genre expanded & in came Heavy Metal. Oh, let's not forget fashion: everything from preppy topsider shoes, plaid skirts & an alligator logo on your 3 button short sleeve shirt to ripped clothes, fishnet, rubber bracelets, plastic pants, pleather jackets.... ahhhhh & big hair! Multi colored hair. Multiple piercings in the ears or the occasional safety pin through the lip. Makeup was cool for boys & girls. I think in a lot ways the 80's also marked an end to an age of innocence. Sex became more than a risk of pregnancy or something a shot of penicillin could clear up... suddenly people are dying because of sex. Drugs that were only available to the very rich were becoming cheaper. People were easily seduced into the use of it because previously only the rich & famous used it thus glamorizing it. Rolling up a $100 bill & snorting a line made a mark that you had arrived. Sadly it became the mark of someone rapidly going out in a blaze of glory.

as to the music...it wasnt all duran duran and electro pop....huge underground punk and indie scene...everything from dead kennedys and crass to the cure and the smiths etc....then the birth of acid house....all good shit!

in the 80s we had fashion trend setters from pop music ...no matter how tacky or hip the clothes worn by Madonna, Michael Jackson, Cindy Lauper, or even the Flock of Seagulls were wearing you were certain that it would be on rack the next day at your local mall. we had the cool movies (The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Blues Brothers), the music and MTV when it was just music 24/7 (before the crap it's airing now). on the downside, we were spending money on credit like crazy since the economy at the time was good.

Doesn't your profile say you're 36? Anyway, I thought the 80's sucked. The 90's were better in every respect. I was also old enough to do the shit I wanted to do in the 90's, and wasn't old enough to do anything except jerk off and fantasize in the 80's. I, too, was a child of the '80s. I went from High School to College to living on my own in the 80's. I watched all the great 80's movies and still do whenever I see that one of them is on TV even though they are usually edited to death. I listened to all the 80s music from Michael Jackson to Hair Metal. When I list my favorite bands today, they would all be bands from that decade. In short, and I apologize to VH1 for what I am about to do, I LOVE the 80's!! ed

The reason way talk radio was born and successful in the 80's was because music sucked! I stopped listening to music when the songs were comprised of 2 chords. beth being a product of the 80's doesn't share that opinion. To her - Disco and specifically Prince and his associates were the 'golden age' of music. When you come to our house you get an eclectic blend of late 60 through 70's blend of Beatles, CSNY and Springsteen inspired, as well as the Disco party music of the 80's.

The 80s had some moments! In high school- mark and I pulled into the parking lot. The news came over the radio. "Disco WDIA- 94.1 FM Chicago, was turning rock." I cried. Disk Jockey "Steve Dahl" hated disco. Early disco maybe was--monotonous. He formed a group called "coho lips"- cos coho cant suck. and his "disco sucks" campaigne went to the top. Crowds of youth brought in disco lps- that he blew up at Cominski Park During a baseball game. :-( it bothered me. yes- i like the licks of Alabama, and real rockers. But that doesnt mean disco was not a choice for me. Later- W-B-M-X Oak Park CHICAGOOOOOOOOOOO! came in! they did saturday live-aint no jive Chicago dance mix party! there was quite a following! the hot mix 5,6. spun the tunes. man those were the days!!!! 102.7. New York had their channel as did Detroit,a nd Miami. Parts OF EU did as well. I have maybe 200 cassettes of this. the mixes were brilliant. tho toward the demise- thye started sneaking gang/drug messages into the music. ahh- the memories. then as the 80s hit. major Payola scam. paly this song and cocaine would show up. sooooo- as a result- the chosen songs were not necessarily the best of teh best. but to be young! i burn a tank of gas=- going downtown. spanteous dance parties would break out on the shores of Lake Michigan. [you cant see the other side so it has ocean front feeling] complete strangers dancing against the lake and Chicago skyline! it was quite an era!!!! boom boxes as big as a couch. yes- and teck was going to save us!!! that was a HUGE promise made in the 80s; that teck was here and getting better with no end in site- and every home would have computer. I owned a TI99, im sure there are some commodor 64 fans here...... the day! whewwwwwwwwwwwwww!

But that doesnt mean disco was not a choice for me. I distinctly recall in junior high in the late 70‘s going to disco parties at a local club. It was within walking distance of school. Seems disco was dead by 1981. When I think of the 80’s disco is far from my mind. We were talking about the 80’s just yesterday. Some local radio station did a tribute to the 80’s. I remember most distinctly about other people in school. People used to dress up like Duran Duran and the Stray Cats. Wonder what their children think of them today? I was always much more of a 50’s-60’s-70’s-and 80’s type of music listener.
