i recently went into a chatroom. Upon entering i asked if Aanyone was from where i live, simply as a means of trying to initiate a conversation. The Mistresses in the room immediately chastised med for trolling. Why is this considered trolling?

Because the internet is a non-space and likely there was ALREADY a conversation going on in the chatroom which you interrupted with your question rather than sitting back and joining what was in progress.

People jump into a chat and ask where people live about a half dozen times an hour (or at least they used to)- and in almost every case it's just a guy who wants to find a local chick to start cybersexing with.

Treat internet chats as you would a coffeehouse- you don't just go up to a bunch of people talking and interrupt them to ask where they live, do you?

And don't forget that chatrooms like this have been around since 1988 when IRC was launched.  Some of the people using them are real pros and not people you want to cross.

I do, but that is why they have my picture on the wall behind the counter, and I am not allowed in Starbucks anymore. *wink*

Meh, I will see your IRC in 1988 and raise you talk on VMS/VAX in 1986!  Back when you used gopher for any kind of link navigation, and the real pros programed in FORTRAN!

And I’ll raise the pot with SQL and communication in BASIC and in 1974  IBM’s LAN SNA and later that year with WYSIWYG…  and then came…  BSD (Berkely Software,, what did the D stand for?) systems, later Unix…

I remember storing our programing on "ticker tape" format and sometime the puch cards..  the nerds/geeks were know by the metal bandaid boxes in their shirt pockets since the ticker tape fit in them for safe keeping..
good gosh been playing with computers from almost before you were even born..
Sigh…..  I am so Old……

In most chatrooms there is a feature that you can click on to see a person's profile and find out information about that person if they want you to.  By blindly going into a chatroom and asking shows a degree of laziness.  On aol I always check who is chatting in a room and check any profiles I might be interested in before I enter to chat.  If someone comes in while I am in the room I go to their profile if they interest me and see what is listed.
