In the future you might notice my posts to be shorter or maybe not proofed. At least until I cure this problem.

I typed for an hour into the H1B visa thread, only to have my PC lockup requiring a restart. And I mean holding the power button down and cancelling scandisk when it cam back up. Windows would not shut down.

At first I can still get "Show Desktop" if any of you are familiar with what that is. I have my taskbar on Autohide and Always on top, so no matter what I do I can get to it, even during a Powerpoint presentation. I like it like this.

It seems like something times out. I have been here without anyuthing else running and it still happens. The only other thing I had that made a reboot necessary was the old Bearshare. The new one is much better behaved.

So the thing is, even after show desktop, it seems to lock the whole thing up, and the program will not close.

The way I see it is that this is an issue with IE. I have IE6, Java console, WM9, all the good updates. I know it is 98SE, but it worked before. I have not installed anything in quite some time. What's more, sometimes it does not happen. This leads me to believe it could have something to do with networking, like a timeout of some type.

Folks, I know I have told people to unplug from the net and let the thing run all night so they could see the error message, but I simply do not have the time for that. I just don't.

Does this happen to anyone else ? Also I haven't noticed it in the Cmail sending process. I have sent some biguns.

The reason I stopped is because it seems to happen when I stay in the send window.

It seems like those times I have to go take a piss or something, it doesn't seem to be too many words. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas. Should I be messing with my IE timeout settings or something ? I mean this is 98SE and I can get into the registry, and it wouldn't be the first time either.

Please don't give me the old clear the cache, delete all cookies routine. And scandisk and defrag have nothing to do with it, if it did, there would be problems other than that. I know I am a bit low on HD space, I got about 20 gigs left of an 80 gig. And that is partly why I don't care to defrag. Too much risk.

I plan to get like a 200 gig, then I will defrag. At that point I will be fully backed up.

But I still think the problem is not in my PC, while it might be a compatability issue, the problem is not likely to be in my PC unless it is a connection issue.

Any ideas ?

That's all Greek to me.
How do you "defrag?"
