Warning, this is random and very geeky. See photos here. So, I doubt it matters to anyone, but I don't own a computer case. My computer is (mostly) new; an AMD 4800 Dual Core, 2 Gigs DDR2, an ATI X1900 with 512MB, two 400 watt PSUs, two SATA II 120 gig HDDs, DVD RW+-, Vista x64 Ultimate etc etc. I didn't buy a case, preferring to spend the money on an LCD monitor. I spent all night tearing this old microwave apart, and it would have worked.... except it didn't have holes on side to screw the box together well, and I don't have a drill right now. Anyway, so I finally ended up putting it into a milk crate. Stephan

Having any overheating issues? The system seems very tightly packed and I would worry about heat.

LA, Hon, if you saw the monster CRT 19" that was there before... you'd understand. I would have been afraid of it collapsing on the box! Besides, I go for substance over style any day. Though, this particular brand of substance has it's own style, dontcha think? ;) Ken, Nope, no overheating problems at all. It's sitting around 50 C. Keep in mind, it's an 'open' case; it gets a lot more airflow than your standard case does, and that drops it a good 5 C from a normal case. Even with that monster GPU. When I do switch to a closed case, I'll likely install a water cooler though... Actually, am thinking my next case will be blue plexiglass or something. Haven't really thought it out yet.... Stephan

fargle, it's kind of an inside joke. I built her computer and instead of buying a case, I just bought a big tupperware bin and carved some holes into the right spots for the fan, plugs, etc. Maybe she'll be nice enough to take a few photos. lighthearted, If only you'd seen the case I made out of a big wooden apple crate.... Primarily I was worried about the two PS's but up against each other with no airspace and their proximity to the motherboard. Although I'm assuming the 400 watt PS are the dual fan sort and one fan is blowing/drawing air across the motherboard. As to water cooling, my present development box is water cooled and besides the high end graphic card (I'm making do with a 256 MB Geforce) is roughly equivalent to what you're using. I really like the watercooling as my office faces west and I had trouble in the late afternoon on bright hot days with my previous box. The only problem is the extra weight and that it takes a lot longer to do anything in the box.

Hmmm. Sounds like you're pretty handy with tools. That's not as flirty as it sounds. I'm just fixing to learn how to build a semi-raised goldfish pond using wood. Obviously, still working out the "hows", lol.

That's not a bad setup, if you don't care what the computer looks like. When I built my first computer, I pretty much had all the components sitting on a bookshelf. Motherboar with the power supply on top, everything else on the bottom. I had to eventually go dumpster diving for a case though, because the thing looked really bad. Luckily, the local dentists office started renovating, so I scored a bunch of their old computers. Most of them still had the old data cartridges, and they hadn't even been wiped, so I had some fun looking through them. Anyways, got any big plans for the magnetron?

Ken, The power supplies aren't the real heat makers; that 70 watt graphics card and the 2.5ghz dual core are. Both have heavy duty fans; the AMD stock fan is the size of a small brick, and the X1900 has a mighty powerful built on fan. I do have the motherboard set to auto reset if the heat climbs past 80 though; not that I'm too worried. I've had a setup similar to this one for years. Stephan
