LONDON - A “fat tax” on salty, sugary and fatty foods could save thousands of lives each year, according to a study published on Thursday. Researchers at Oxford University say that charging Value Added Tax (VAT) at 17.5 percent on foods deemed to be unhealthy would cut consumer demand and reduce the number of heart attacks and strokes. The purchase tax is already levied on a small number of products such as potato crisps, ice cream, confectionery and chocolate biscuits, but most food is exempt. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19726781

Now since this is the first suggestion made all the not so bringhts will jump on it as a really good solution! Change the already corrupt tax structure to an even more corrupt tax structure! It'll hurt fast-food corporations much more than it'll hurt individuals, and that's why you can expect to hear a whole lot of bitching and whining if the proposal is ever seriously considered. "What? That only fair because it will lower the use of water (by the poor), and reduce the price of water for everyone. We can have like toilet meters and install them on every toilet. make a bundle! i agree such bs

There already IS a tax on toilet-flushing. It's called a sewer tax. And if you have municipal water, chances are you're paying for that, too. I pay two taxes every time I flush my toilet. Non-processed food, cooking for myself, fresh ingredients, etc., are so much more inexpensive than prepared garbage labelled "Health Food." Sinergy

Using that logic I could say Desert Land is so cheap, but nice fertile land is so expensive, they should tax the desert Land at a very high rate. It makes no sense. Except to give the government more money, and they don't need anymore.

seems to me that when i lived in CA, there was no sales tax on food...then they decided that there should be sales tax on what they deemed to be junk food...the details are a bit hazy for me right now (i'm blaming a brain-eating virus), but i do remember being quite surprised by some of the things that got put on the snack foods to be taxed list... this is the perfect place for me to go into one of my rants about Big Daddy government, but i've been told that ranting requires energy that can be better used for getting well right now.....

You can buy fruit and veg to keep you going for 3 days for about 5 quid. 3 of those pre-packaged meals will cost you about 6-8 quid.
