Level -> The Fat Tax (7/12/2007 3:47:42 PM)

LONDON - A “fat tax” on salty, sugary and fatty foods could save thousands of lives each year, according to a study published on Thursday.

Researchers at Oxford University say that charging Value Added Tax (VAT) at 17.5 percent on foods deemed to be unhealthy would cut consumer demand and reduce the number of heart attacks and strokes.

The purchase tax is already levied on a small number of products such as potato crisps, ice cream, confectionery and chocolate biscuits, but most food is exempt.

Oh for goodness sake...when will the madness ever end??? Legislating safety and health will get people nowhere very fast. Ugh.

It amazes me how easily people in Europe accept the "Nanny State". The sad thing is, we are headed down that same road.

Please be careful with the generalisations, okay?

I think it is a fantastic idea!!!  Eating healthy is very expensive and it shouldn’t be…

i have to agree with this 100%.  Trying to eat healthier raises my monthly shopping bill $100-$150.  It shouldn't cost *more* to eat healthy.

I also agree with you, its amazing I can go to the store and find things like chips and sodas are cheaper than fruits, vegs, and fruit juices. Its insane!

It'll hurt fast-food corporations much more than it'll hurt individuals, and that's why you can expect to hear a whole lot of bitching and whining if the proposal is ever seriously considered.

"What?  WE'RE contributing to the national obesity epidemic?  Impossible!  People are responsible for their own food choices.  We just want to rake billions off their bad decisions..."

well personally i think we should tax how many time people flush their toilets, i mean especially out west where water is not so plentiful.    That only fair because it will lower the use of water (by the poor), and reduce the price of water for everyone.

We can have like toilet meters and install them on every toilet.  make a bundle!

i agree such bs

Lordandmaster -> RE: The Fat Tax (7/12/2007 6:26:55 PM)

There already IS a tax on toilet-flushing.  It's called a sewer tax.  And if you have municipal water, chances are you're paying for that, too.  I pay two taxes every time I flush my toilet.

Next time you try reductio ad absurdum, pick a better example.

not only that, but in CA, if your home has been sold in say, the last 15 years or so (maybe longer) you must have a low flow or ultra low flow toilet.

Eating healthy cut my food bill to 1/3 of what it was before.

Non-processed food, cooking for myself, fresh ingredients, etc., are so much more inexpensive than prepared garbage labelled "Health Food."

How would a tax on unhealthy food make "healthy" food cheaper?

Like others have stated taxing one thing doesn't make another cheaper.

Using that logic I could say

Desert Land is so cheap, but nice fertile land is so expensive, they should tax the desert Land at a very high rate.

It makes no sense. Except to give the government more money, and they don't need anymore.

lilsubl -> RE: The Fat Tax (7/12/2007 9:47:47 PM)

seems to me that when i lived in CA, there was no sales tax on food...then they decided that there should be sales tax on what they deemed to be junk food...the details are a bit hazy for me right now (i'm blaming a brain-eating virus), but i do remember being quite surprised by some of the things that got put on the snack foods to be taxed list...

this is the perfect place for me to go into one of my rants about Big Daddy government, but i've been told that ranting requires energy that can be better used for getting well right now.....

I've heard this a few time from Americans.

In England, it's cheaper to eat healthy.

You can buy fruit and veg to keep you going for 3 days for about 5 quid.

3 of those pre-packaged meals will cost you about 6-8 quid.
