Amsterdam cracks down on Red Light area
By TOBY STERLING, Associated Press WriterThu Jul 12, 2:40 PM ET

Authorities announced a major crackdown on organized crime in Amsterdam's Red Light District on Thursday, for the first time bringing national police investigators and tax authorities to bear on what had long been seen as a local problem.

With its scantily clad prostitutes posing in brothel windows and coffee shops oozing the pungent aroma of marijuana smoke, the area's seediness has always been part of its attraction.

But the district is a magnet for petty criminals and, authorities believe, human traffickers, drug lords and mobsters who take advantage of the situation to launder money.

It is wonderful seeks, I'm reluctant to live anywhere else but as Level says, there are problems everywhere.

I haven't noticed the crackdown yet but I have noticed the rise in East European women working in the area who have probably been trafficked.

As someone who has been to Amsterdam 6 times, I'll say it's average. Give me Manchester any day of the week.

The women in the knocking shops are a joke. All plastic tits and fake tans. I've looked through the windows, but never been in once, not my style. It's pure comedy. Really, the fuckers need to go home and have a cup of tea or something instead of parading 'round like idiots.

Outside of the red light district, yeah you can have a smoke, but you can anywhere on this planet.

On balance, nothing to write home about.

The music is fuckin' shocking.

Stick to England - better beer, women are far more game, much better music.

Plus, if you have to pay for it, call it a day.

Now you are joking NG. As they say, the quickest way out of Manchester is through the bottle and so it remains. There is nothing in Manchester that any other average city hasn't got too. As for superior music, that is a prorochial view but everyone is entitled to their own taste.

Out of interest, when were you last in Manchester?

I personally think that allowing Dutch hookers to ply their trade without mob interference is a great thing.

The mob goons dont have to suck somebody off for their 100 guilders.

Seeks, yeah, I thought it was supposed to be a real socialist paradise.

Amsterdam has its appeal, no doubt about that. 'Architecture is superb. A few great museums there, and if you like art, then I suppose it would have huge appeal.

The problem is that it's just too in your face, and it's awash with day-trippers. You go the first time, and it's great, the red light district and coffee shops are a novelty etc (particularly if you're 17). The second time, it's still good. The third time and it's losing its appeal (you're now 21). Fourth time - the drug dealers following you down the street and on your shoulder offering you "e's and charlie" like a fuckin' parrot are really starting to piss you off and you want to knock them right out - the novelty has worn off and it's becoming more aggravation that it's worth. Plus, everyone is on a bike in Amsterdam. It takes all of your energy trying to swerve them, and try not getting knocked over by one of them when you've just come out of a coffee shop. It's like wacky races and there's no room for "after you" - they're not stopping for anything.

I agree, however, that they have a much more logical approach to prostitution than we do in England. We could certainly learn from there.

Straying away from the topic, I like the Dutch, they're straight to the point, you know where you stand with them, but I much prefer Germany as a place to visit. Berlin is a superb city with lots to do and see, and far more relaxing than Amsterdam, and not awash with day trippers and drug dealers.

About a year ago. I have a god daughter that lives and teaches in the Cheadle area. As far as northern cities go, Leeds, Liverpool and Newcastle give Manchester a run for its money.

If regurgitated three chord guitar wonders are your taste in music then I concede, the music is better in England but they are producing nothing that hasn't already been done in the sixties and seventies.

As for beer, my guess is you think Dutch beer starts and finishes with Heineken or Amstel which is far from the truth. Though the best beer in Europe is Belgian beer by a long long way, they have far more varieties than anyone else and most are top notch.

'Strange, because I remember a post of yours a while back stating that the two things you miss about England are the beer and the tea.

I do miss English beer, it's a cultural thing but that doesn't stop the Belgians having the most and best varieties.

NG, isn't prostitution legal in Germany too?
I haven't been to Germany or Holland yet.
And what's "e" and "charlie?"

'Not sure about the prostitution laws in Germany. I know Hamburg has the biggest red light district in Europe, so it probably is legal. I don't think it's as straightforward as The Netherlands, could be wrong. 'Long story short, ecstacy and coke. The dealers are a right pain in the arse, and they're swarming all over the show down the red light district in Amsterdam. A mate of mine had a gun pulled on him by some mad fucker completely off his nut - a dealer on the rob. Mind you, we were down there at 6 in the morning when the whole place was shut and only the dealers and us 6 looking for a pub were around. Luckily, the police saw what was going on and came over in a car - took one look at us and said, "you must be English" and shaking their heads. 'Told us to do ourselves a favour and get a taxi out of the area. That was down the red light district - only one incident, but it has a rep for being over-populated with thieves and two-bob blaggards.

To be fair, if you've got money in your back pocket, I'd be surprised if you go far wrong in Amsterdam providing you give the red light district a swerve.

The quality of the grass is suspect, too. Maastricht has much a better rep over here. I'm sure MC will come in and say if you know where you're going it's all good, but we're talking from a tourist's angle
