I've seen people who choose to use a negative descriptor as part of their screen name. Angry, sad, troubled, violent, pathetic, broken, etc. It seems an odd thing to want to have that be someone's first image of you, especially if you are here searching for a partner. Our words here are the first impression and I am wondering why anyone would want to go out of their way to make a negative first impression? Sure, there are some who may not be searching and use it as a means of keeping people away, but I have clicked on several of these profiles and found that they are indeed here to meet others.

So, does seeing such negativity in what a person chooses to call themselves influence whether you make contact or not?

For those that use such words in your name, what is your personal reason for doing so and does it matter to you if it might close some doors?

I am not sure of your experience, but in mine many of these negative names are from young people. I think at a certain age that seems like the cool thing to do.

Maybe they're just not clever enough to think of ErinGoBraless.

I find a lot of this stuff in young femsubs' screen names.  Hi, I'm small and broken and pathetic, please find me and take care of me.  It turns me off.

I think it's because they intentionally or unintentionally attract the "rescuer" or "knight in shining armor" types to "save" them from their "broken" and "troubled" life.

A name like allofyousocalleddommeswhotrytomilkmeformoneyandleavemypatheticlittlewhinyassouttodry  doesn't turn you on and make you want to contact them?

This happens for a lot of non-independant feeling types both male and female both young and old. I wouldn't over generalize with the age or gender concept here. It's done to trigger the poor pitiful me responce. It's self victimization and no I don't like it. Victims are not attractive...but I don't think many people see it this way. Also online this is a good trap for predators. So whichever way it's taken it doesn't seem positive.

It probably happens more with younger people and it probably happens more with females. So what? Generalizing is not always wrong. It depends on the criteria you use to generalize.

When I was in my early 20s, I would have been more attracted to these types of monikers.  Interesting how that line of thinking made so much sense at the time and it doesn't now.  At that point, I think I found people like that more "honest" with themself or more "in touch" with their emotions.

Well, sure. I know, I know. You're not supposed to judge a book by it's cover, but hell, I'm not looking at the cover if the title stinks, yanno?

One of the words you listed was 'troubled' and that is very close to my screenname minus the O (because it didn't fit back in the old pay-per-hour AOL days when you were limited to 10 characters) and if someone doesn't like my book title, no harm, no foul. I figure it just wasn't meant to be. I chose this name for myself because it's rather fitting and I thought it was kinda cute. I've also used the screenname LadyServes for several years on AOL but Bita just seems to fit me better and by now, it's like a pair of well-worn old leather shoes .. just plain comfortable.

Himself still thinks LotaTruble would have been more accurate.

I guess risky could be considered a negative word.  At least judging by the emails I have gotten since I started using this name:

"How risky are you?"
"Your name intrigues me.  Care to risk a meeting this weekend?"
"It is less of a risk not to meet me."
"I can mak u glad you took a risk."
"RU ready to risk yourself and meet me?"

Umm... a name is just a name.  Sure lots of names out there are practically screaming for the knights in shining armor to save them.  But there are guys who are into that stuff.

I do take risks, but I haven't lost my sense.  I like my men that way too.

Yes, I makes me choose not to contact them, along with a negative sounding profile. It all seems to point to a person that is not what I desire to have in my life.

Edited to add,
I think the screen name effects my understanding of the person more then their real name since people choose what they are called online. Now if we all went by our real names (for the screen names) then I don't think I would judge them just on the screen name.

I have been 'informed' by various people before that '.dark.' is a negative word....  but then the word doesn't hold negative meaning for me - I mean, calling myself 'itsnotexactlylightinshadowsbecauseitsalittlebitdarkishinheresobringatorch' instead of '.dark.inshadows.' - that might have come across a bit too long and boring...

Peace

I think a screen name that was very negative would indeed make me repelled by someone... just bad mojo

My thoughts exactly. They also use it to perpetuate their own victim mentality.

Celeste, I have never seen "Troubled" in the way you use "Truble". Somehow your "Truble" comes across in a fun and mischievous way.

Salacious is a nice word to use.

Although at first glance I was trying to decide why I would be attracted to a squid.

Not saying molluscaz are a hard limit, but there ya go.

So a name like rude jerk or some synonym thereof would be what you were talking about?
I would agree it does seem to be a child like cry for attention.
