JerseyKrissi72 -> Rent/ Mortgage Payments.... (7/13/2007 1:58:20 PM)

           Is rent expensive where you live? I know Jersey is crazy with rent prices...we pay $800.00 for a one bedroom apartment and pay our own electric/ heat is included though..[&:]

Termyn8or -> RE: Rent/ Mortgage Payments.... (7/13/2007 2:27:36 PM)

Seems to me you could buy a pretty nice house with a payment like that. The only problem is the downstroke. Unless you don't want a house.

When I visited my buddy in FL he said it was cheaper to buy than rent. There are reasons for that, like upkeep etc., but taxes are not all that bad he said.

And in my case, the house payment eventually stopped, rent never does. Rent accrues no equity at all.

And to top it off, I thought some of the people who work in NYC commute from NJ to save on living costs. Has supply and demand taken it's toll on that situation as well ?

I think that is alot of money for a one bedroom, but if it is a nice location, there are places that cost that much here. (Cleveland) But less of them of course, as the demand is not here.

Trust me krissi, you don't want to come here, there is NOTHING here.

SirRober -> RE: Rent/ Mortgage Payments.... (7/13/2007 3:24:54 PM)

Rent here in HI is horrendous... I am paying almost 1700 for 3 bed 1 and 2 / .5 baths not including ulities which are close to 300 a mos.

DesertRat -> RE: Rent/ Mortgage Payments.... (7/13/2007 3:36:20 PM)

~fr~
My house is 1800 sq. ft. It's on five acres in a lovely little canyon with a creek and great views. Things are pretty affordable here. Payment is about 600/ mo., taxes are 380/yr., and insurance is about the same. Quite wonderful. Just need to find a slave willing and able to relocate. I can't begin to imagine how much this place would cost on either coast. Being a desert rat does have its advantages.

funny you should ask, I happened to browse the rental section today at the dr.s office.  a one br/one ba apartment here in this part of the valley will cost you anywhere from $1000-$1200, not including utilities.  and if you don't have a/c, trust me, you will regret it.

now, a 3br/2ba rental in the Hollywood Hills, fully loaded, is going to set you back about $3K a month, and I'm pretty sure that's not including utilities either.

Real Estate is Location, Location, Location.

Krissi, I'm in a 2br apt just between Paterson and Paramus and pay ~$1200/mo.  In most places, that could buy some real property.  But, alas, not here.  Many metropolitan areas have the same problem.  But, that's what it costs to live 15 miles from NYC, 90 minutes from the beach, 90 minutes from the NJ/PA/NY mountain areas, 2 hours from Philly, 2 hours to Atlantic City, etc. etc.

Let people talk, there is no place in the world that offers the amenities like New Jersey does.  You just have to pay for it.

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Rent/ Mortgage Payments.... (7/13/2007 3:56:44 PM)

there are alot of very hard-working people that didn't have the ability to further their education that cannot afford such "luxuries"...so it's not the greatest place to live...if only you got paid for the WORK YOU ACTUALLY DID....damn...i'd be rich[&:]

njyngdom -> RE: Rent/ Mortgage Payments.... (7/13/2007 4:15:04 PM)

If it gets too expensive that nobody can afford it, the economy will balance itself out and prices will fall.

But, there's still quite a large desire for people to live in and around NYC and these wonderful areas.  High demand = High prices.

Trust me, I know how you feel.  My 5 year plan involves finishing paying off some debt and then saving up a nice chunk of change to move out west or down south and not fight this environment for the rest of my life.

And that's coming from someone who self-made the ability to further my education and still can't afford those darned luxuries (Yet...)

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: Rent/ Mortgage Payments.... (7/13/2007 6:06:44 PM)

rent here depends on the neighborhood, crime and landlord  some neighorhoods it's $1100 for a studio/1bedroom or where i live, it's $550 for a basement apartment

persiphone -> RE: Rent/ Mortgage Payments.... (7/13/2007 9:31:44 PM)

Here its 725 for a 2 br 1 bath....however the houses are going for $325, 000 for a 1900 sq fter.....its not even on a half an acre. The same house 2 years ago, before the hurricane went for 125, 000. Supply and demand, however the market is leveling back out. Six months ago a house around the corner was 266,000. Its now at 188,000.

lilsubl -> RE: Rent/ Mortgage Payments.... (7/13/2007 10:17:30 PM)

tigerlilly34 -> RE: Rent/ Mortgage Payments.... (7/13/2007 11:42:46 PM)

i used to pay 300 without utilities for rent each month for a one bedroom apartment. now i have my own home that i pay 344 a month for the morgage to a old victorian era home with 5 bedrooms, there are advantages to living in a small midwestern town sometimes. i still commute everywhere but hey at least the house is mine.

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Rent/ Mortgage Payments.... (7/14/2007 4:37:00 AM)

pahunkboy -> RE: Rent/ Mortgage Payments.... (7/14/2007 5:41:16 AM)

my mortgage is $261.  can you say SHREWD?

throw in post card views of the Susquehanna river....

i view my home as a consumable item. if i walk away with nothing- i still did better then rent an apartamnt. actually a few CM members encouraged me to BUY.

i lived in a metro. i was too busy working to offord there- that i could not enjoy the cultural things.   at my payment i can visit metros,,,,,,,,

[no jobs here tho..]

Aileen68 -> RE: Rent/ Mortgage Payments.... (7/14/2007 5:49:59 AM)

My mortgage isn't bad.  Only about $1800 a month.  I get killed with property taxes...$14,000 a year.  It goes up anywhere from 500 to almost 1,000 each year.  Ridiculous.

Aileen,
Ah, fond memories of NJ property taxes. You're paying more tax than me. On the other hand, adding up all the rent mortgage payments documented so far doesn't equal my payment. It's incredible what they get for houses. But as the Realtor said, "God isn't making any more oceanfront views."

On the rent side, my daughter just moved to a one bedroom in Hermosa - $1500/month.
