lighthearted -> transference (7/13/2007 6:27:26 PM)

Main Entry: transĀ·ferĀ·ence [image]http://www.m-w.com/images/audio.gif[/image] [image]http://www.m-w.com/images/audio.gif[/image]
Pronunciation: tran(t)s-'f&r-&n(t)s, 'tran(t)s-(")
Function: noun
1 : an act, process, or instance of transferring : CONVEYANCE, TRANSFER
2 : the redirection of feelings and desires and especially of those unconsciously retained from childhood toward a new object (as a psychoanalyst conducting therapy)

I'll admit, I'm hardly the most experienced person in bdsm, and I'm also not a psychoanalyst, but I have wondered about the similarities between transference and sub frenzy, or transference and a newbie becoming completely enamored with their first Dom/me.

I'd love to hear thoughts on this.

Tranference in BDSM is no different than it is in any other "sect" of people.

any dynamic will be affected by transference, and counter transference.
along with therapeutic relationships, you can harness the power of transference and countertransference (when the person receiving the transference responds to it as if it were real) as a tool. Age play would be a great example.

I've always thought that when you develop feelings for your therapist, that's transference, because of the nature of the feelings and the relationship.

my question, to clarify, does this happen between a dom and a sub?  because the sub becomes so reliant upon a dom for so many things?  might the idea of "sub frenzy" be explained by this phenemenon?

I think you should trust someone before you play with them, and that trust often leads you into liking them and having feelings for them....

I don't play outside of a relationship so I don't understand not wanting to have feelings.    You trying to avoid having feelings or discounting them as transference?

no, no, not at all.  at least not in this relationship, lol.

I don't think what's going on is majorly attributable to transference, though that certainly can be a piece of it.

I think it's more simply adrenalines, endorphins and "new relationship energy" stuff.

That and a tendency to romanticize all this, so that a new person, just discovering this lifestyle wants desperately to "get started," often with no thought as to what they're doing, how they're doing it or with whom they're doing it with. And people who are not so new but perhaps are finding themselves unattached just wanting to "feel" again.

Transference in a therapeutic relationship is when the therapist starts feeling the way the client is feeling... for example... the client feels hopeless and that there is no way out of the situation and the therapist starts mirroring those feelings as well. Or the client believes they are useless and can't do anything right and the therapist starts thinking along those lines as well. It's basically just picking up on each other's emotions, thoughts, beliefs, energy etc. and taking them on as your own.Countertransference is when it bounces back again.
