When I was a child my aunt had one of these sorts of rooms in her house. It was sparkling white with touches of black. She had a white marble fireplace, white Persian rugs, white sofa, with black enameled Asian furniture... it looked like something out of a palace. Her husband was a CEO of a company, and the only action that room ever saw was their more treasured business associates... it was a room designed to impress and awe.

As a child I was only allowed to look through the door.. it was not roped off, but no one ever went in there unless it was business associates.

Personally, the idea of having such a space in my house is revolting. I think that this is passe for the most part as people want all their spaces to be completely functional.

Julia, interesting.  yes- a few of my rooms are nicer then others- i might say- not allow coffee on teh white silk sofa... but i want to feel at home.  my brother is a perfectionist. the dishes get washed practically before they are dirty.  i recall trying to save a nickle by not having the light on- i spilled ice tea on his throw rug. SO- it had to go to the bath tub for a rinse. consider the cost of the dish liquid- and theres a good nickle.

black counters are in style now- which show every speck of dust,.

im going to kill my screaming parrot!

My Aunt had almost the same set-up. When I was five, I got to go in that room. First she asked which chair I wanted to sit in, then she put a folded sheets, like runners to the chair, then a sheet over the chair. I had to follow the path and only sit in that one chair. My little visit to that room was quite short. I had way too much energy for that room. I never got my tea either. (laughing)

While my house isn't set up for um's, I just move some items out of reach, should someone visit who has them. Behind the bar area is off limits to um's, so I move alot of things behind it so little ones curiosity doesn't get the better of them. I also wouldn't own the type of furniture that I couldn't curl up with a good book on, or not allow all my guests to sit on.
