why should he apologize for stating something that's absolutely true? the NAACP should further their efforts to change that image instead of demanding an apology. i can see Mayor Richard M. Daley of Chicago saying this in a speech when the next innocent child is shot by gang members ...it starts with us parents - we should be their role models not the rappers/hiphop artists, gangs, etc.

What the mayor said: "too many of our youth, primarily African American, are imitating and/or participating in a gangster type of dress, attitude, behavior and action." What the NAACP apparently chose to hear: "ALL black youths are thugs." Typical. This is the kind of nonsense that just fuels racial tension, in my opinion. Instead of focusing on the problem at hand and the fact that 122 black youths were arrested for participating in such activity, the NAACP instead chooses to focus on the statement the mayor made which is NOT in any way a racial attack. The mayor also cited statistics showing more than 60 percent of Charlotte's gang members are African American. And, he said, the victims of gang violence also tend to be black. Why doesn't the NAACP focus it's energies on THIS instead of distorting what the mayor said and then whining about it? He also noted: "One thing we agree on is that it is a horrible stereotype," McCrory said, "but it's being perpetuated by those who continue to dress like, behave like and act like gang members. It's not productive to our community, our neighborhoods, our schools, or to those individuals who are doing it." Amen, mayor. It's not productive for any one of any race. Kudos to him for refusing to apologize for something he did not even say to start with............luci

Aileen, Very true. And once the big, bad "racist" mayor has groveled and begged for forgiveness, the Charlotte community can sleep easy knowing a big problem has been resolved[8\|]. I would think it would concern the NAACP more that so many of the victims of the gang violence are black than worrying about how "harmful" the mayor's observation was. But, since it's too hard to "fix" the gang problem, why not focus on an irrelevant issue that they can "fix" by bitching? What a victory for the NAACP when this hateful, black-hating mayor gives in[:'(]! Geesh............luci

And, to me, it's sad because some of those in powerful positions within such organizations as the NAACP could really work to make positive changes and improve race relations. Instead, in so many cases such as this one, they prefer to feel offended at something that was not intended in any way to be offensive instead of doing anything about the original problem being addressed. But, as I said earlier, it's hard to fix real problems such as gang activity and racial tensions. It's soooo easy to sit back and feel offended anytime anyone says anything you don't like. So, why not take the easier option and look like you're really working on something important? Dragging this seemingly well-meaning mayor through the mud will surely make things all better, right?[8\|]............luci
