I was chatting on another site and this subject came up so I thought we would discuss it here. As most of us know, there is a waiting list for someone who needs a liver to save their lives..do you think it's fair that a president or someone in power should go any higher on the list just because of who they are? I don't care if you are president of the United States, I think everyone should have a fair chance. I knew a woman who finally did get her liver after 8 years of waiting and told me that they won't even consider you until you become so sick...wouldn't you think they would want you to be healthy when you receive your liver so you have a better chance at living with it?? Some things in medicine I just don't understand.

i really don't know how to answer this since i am not an organ donor and don't wanna be. i don't even care if i end up needing one, i don't want any "life-saving" methods used when the time comes.

I can understand how you feel Michael..if I ever get so sick that I need to live on machines I wouldn't want to continue living but if an organ other than my own can save my life- I will go for it.

I'll give a serious answer. I think there should be some consideration of age and other health conditions before receiving a donation of an organ in limited supply.  I would want a 20 yr old in otherwise good health to receive one before a 70 yr old with a bad heart who may only live a few more years even with the new liver. Also i agree the recipient should be as healthy as possible when receiving it and not have to wait 'til they are on their death bed. I don't thnk a celebrity should go to the top of the list, especially if his/her liver problems are from alcohol abuse.

I am also against the government paying for expensive medical procedures for inmates on death row or for inmates who only gat arrested so that their medical bills would be paid. If an inmate developed a medical problem while in prison then i feel we should pay for treatment. I don't think we should pay for sex change surgeries or elective surgeries for inmates either. But this is a whole other topic.

I'm more or less with proudsub - why wait until the person has a better chance of dying? But I'm also biased as I have a cousin who will eventually need a heart transplant (congenital heart defect caused by the meds prescribed to her Mother to stop the vomiting... it was either them or lose the baby). Ideally, she'll be ok for another 10-15 years, but in the mean time, her activities are restricted.

Also, I think that the gov't should change the laws so that it is assumed that you are a doner unless your drivers license or whatever states otherwise.

I don't know about the U.S or anywhere else, but in Canada, we have a live doner registry. Sort of like a bone marrow one, except you're matched for liver (as you can lose a part of it and it will regenerate itself) and/or kidney. Just something to think about.

I don't know if a President should be placed above a plumber, but one thing I do know; there is no excuse for the shortage of organs. It's embarrasing.

And the thought that my penis will supply 4 or 5 recipients with a new lease on their sex lives warms the cockles of my heart.

I don't know if I would accept an organ if I was 70, but right now? Maybe. I've also made it very clear that I will donate any useable organs from skin to eyeballs to... Well, much like Level's cockles, my G-spot could probably help several women. I don't think I'm ready to donate my face, and I don't want med students playing with my brains.

Should someone 'important' go first on the registry? Nope. I'd have a hard time arguing that if two recipients are exactly equal on the list, a scientist working to cure a disease shouldn't go first, though. Hrm...

I think there should be very strict guidelines and it should be kept as fair as possible. I don't think that being president or "important" should in any way bump you up the list. That is bullshit!

i've worked in hospitals where organ transplants have been done, both the harvesting & the implantations...i have watched the technology improve over time...i won't go into graphic details, but i have seen horrible things done in the name of saving a "life"...i have listened to the debates, all sides on who should be accepted as a candidate & who should be rejected...as a recovering alcoholic/drug addict, i fall on the side of no organ transplants for those who have squandered their original parts...& i don't just mean those who have killed their livers from drinking...i don't believe that any particular life should be chosen over any other one when it comes to the transplants...so, i don't believe that a healthy 20-year-old should get preference to a 70 year old, simply because statistics say the 20 year old will live longer...i don't believe that a national leader should get preference over a plumber...

for myself?  no thank you...no organ transplants for me...as i said, i have seen the reality & i don't choose that way of life for myself...when my factory installed parts wear out, i'll be happy to go to the boneyard intact.......

Given the scarcity of organs, the organ goes to those who are in greatest need, and they're generally the sickest ones.

With some transplants (hearts for example), you will be pulled from the list temporarily if you develop infections or other secondary illnesses.  So it's a fine line between "about to croak" vs "about to croak but can still take a transplant".

I'd like to donate but I'm "unclean" because I have a bovine tissue graft around a part of my brain.  When they find a blood test for mad cow disease, maybe they'll let me off my parts.

moooooooo.

I think it would be good if the president needed an organ of any kind.  Or any big star.  It would bring to the donation process to the forefront of every citizen in the US.  The need.  The problems you have to go through if you need one.   In the end a lot more people would end up helping their fellow citizens out when they need it the most.  To actually give them life.

In terms of who should get what when.  The only time I would draw the line is self abuse.  In other words why should an alcoholic get a liver before someone who did not abuse their bodies?  The president or whoever should wait in the same line with everyone else who needs one.  If they don't happen to get it quick enough then they are actually a normal citizen in the US who doesn't always get a fair hand.

I think there should be no question of being a donor, I think everybody should be a donor with no choice in the matter....when you die your usable organs are harvested...end of discussion.

A very good friend of mine recently had a lung transplant.  He chose a hospital that had a great reputation for successful transplant and had to move to that city.  He had to be within a couple of hours of the hospital at all times.  Then the waiting started.  He was getting sicker but since organs go by tissue match first then current need, he had no idea how long the wait would be.  His wait was only a few months and is now back home but still in recovery.

The interesting parts were how the selection process worked.  The first priority was always around probability of success first, then need from those that were likely to succeed.  He also had two chances to refuse the organ before he was taken off the list.  He declined one because of TB in the donor lungs which would have lessened the chance of success.

My opinion about who gets the organ is that something has to be the deciding factor.  When there is more than one candidate for an organ (all being a match for the tissue and all in the same immediate need) then something has to be the deciding factor.  You can't just toss a coin.  Age and  chance for a full life are obvious factors.  What if there are still more than one young candidate without other health concerns?  There still has to be a decision.  That's where social factors come in.  It never seems fair but something has to force a decision as there is one organ for two people in need.
