Does anyone own a timeshare?
What are the Plusess and minuses of Timeshare ownership?
Where do U own a timeshare?

sub4hire -> RE: Does Anyone own a timeshare? (7/17/2007 6:06:42 AM)

When I was young I used to own one.  It was on the beach at Newport Beach, Orange County, California.
Our timeshare was a bit different than the ones they have today.  There were only 4 of us.  Not 4000 or whatever the
large corporations sell them for today.  I got a lot of time in the house back then.  I ended up selling it when I moved to
the beach on a full time basis.
Essentially it worked out great it was like living with roommates you never saw.  Having a home pretty much anytime you
needed it without having a full mortgage payment.

I'd probably buy into another if I saw one I thought I could enjoy today.  However as far from the beach as I could get.
Today it would be in the mountains.
Not sure if I would buy into one of those big business ones.  I think the minus's get larger on those.
They cost a lot more money and you get to use it so little.  You need to weigh the pro's and cons of how much you are going to be
able to use it versus a week someplace else renting your own hotel or whatever.

I bought into a timeshare years ago but sold my interest in the 90s.  The pluses were more along the lines of a pre-paid vacation but association fees and strict scheduling requirements made it hard to work with for me.  I found using the same place that I had a timeshare and simply renting for the weeks I wanted left me more options and flexibility.  It also cost less in the long run.   However, my opinion is based on the actual place I had bought into and not timeshares in general.

Good luck.

Some people swear by them. They fit into their vacation schedule very well.
A lot of people like to take their vacations on the same weeks every year so timeshares would work out great for them.
They get the same beach house or condo everytime.
We have a lot of those here in Myrtle Beach and the people I've talked to that have them love them.
Just watch out for those extra "fees". Some places will try to charge you a "maintainence fee" of say $400 per year.
Fifty two weeks in a year times $400. Nice extra money for them.
Like all "fees" they're negotiable so *negotiate!*
Not a lot of "maintainance" to be done in a week usually.
And some some timeshares *do* appreciate in value!
It depends but say 10 years after owning it you may be able to sell it for a lot more than you paid for it!
I'd avoid any timeshares in foreign countries though due to contractual differences and differences in their legal systems from ours. You could get screwed and there's nothing you could do about it legally like you could in the U.S.
Also, like anything if it sounds too good to be true.... so make sure you do your homework and have your lawyer look over the paperwork before signing the contract.
If you do it right then you should be able to enjoy your timeshare for many years and sell it for a nice profit a few years down the road.
They wouldn't work for me though.
I'm retired and don't really take vacations too often.
I'm on permanent vacation here in beautiful Myrtle Beach.
If I go on a trip it's usually Ireland and Europe and I don't normally stay in one place for more than 2 or 3 days.

Where is the best place you visited on a timeshare exchange?

sub4hire -> RE: Does Anyone own a timeshare? (7/26/2007 8:02:09 AM)

Never visited one of the idea we were going to buy into it.  We have a friend with one in Vegas though.
Nice place.  Better than any hotel we've ever stayed in.  A block off the strip.  Been there many times now with him.
He pays around 250 a month, every month.  While its nice I don't think it is worth it for the money.

a  bad investment.  buy junk silver coins. you will do better in the end.

timeshares are like rent a widget store. it costs more then to  flat out buy what you need.

IMO run!!!   [some time share expire 30 yrs....]

PaHunk, not neccessarily!
It depends again on how long you hold onto them.
A timeshare bought in 1988 say for $8,500 at a nice resort area would probably be worth $30-$60k today. Maybe more.
They do appreciate and you have to factor in inflation too.

I think you got a good timeshare there bschwimmer.  The ones in Vegas, I forgot to mention he still has to pay 150 a night when he goes.  On top of the chunk he put up front.  On top even of the 250 a month.  So whenever he goes he asks us if we'd like to go with to help defray the costs.

I own 2 timeshares, one every other year in Las Vegas and one yearly in Orlando.  I love them!  I find them to be a great investment as we take 1 to 2 vacations a year.

I always go to Orlando, I enjoy having a condo vrs a hotel room, it's much more comfortable. The service at the resort is top notch. Resturants and pools are nice and there are so many activities you would never have to go off property.

I also bought the 2 bedroom unit so I can use a one bedroom unit twice if I want, extra bang for the buck. I have had no problem exchanging weeks and getting the one I want. I have also exchanged for places like Mexico and the Bahamas.

Thats just My experience...packing My bags for Vegas soon
