When I shampoo, I only massage the shampoo into my scalp; the lower part of my hair gets the lather rinsed through it during rinsing, but as little as possible, so as not to dry out the ends. Then I use a handful of conditioner, working it through the strands but avoiding the scalp, to keep the top from being oily. After rinsing and wrapping it briefly in a towel to absorb most of the water, I use spray on detangler to help make it brush more easily. I have to be very gentle with the ends, to avoid having them get into snarls and breaking during brushing.

Rhonda, have your ends trimmed half an inch to an inch every eight weeks,
this will keep the design line fuller and will avoid allowing the split ends which
develop to travel up the hair shaft. Average hair growth is half an inch to an
inch a month, some more, some less. Waiting two months will allow for that
two steps forward, one step back approach which will keep your ends
from breaking due to shampoos, styling, the elements, all of which affect
your hair. Hair is fed by the blood stream, so eat healthy and include proper
protein in your diet as hair is composed mainly of protein. Many things affect
hair growth, diet, stress, chemicals, exposure to the elements, styling etc. so
be good to your body and take care with your hair, use professional products
designed for your hair type, and shampooing everyday is not a neccessity if
your hair hasn't been exposed to too much dirt or grime. Brushing will allow
the natural scalp oils to be distributed along the shaft, a natural conditioner if
you will. Using a keylating or clarifying shampoo once a week and leaving
it on for at least five minutes will remove product and hard water build up,
allowing your other products to work their best. Hair, it's your crowning
glory, be good to it and it will serve you well. And a happy Master makes
for a happy submissive.

I have some children's leave in spray conditioner that I use between washings. Wash your hair every other day at the most; use luke warm water; a wide toother comb will help prevent breakage; take prenantl vits if you want your hair [and or nails] to grow faster; instead of a twoel, use an old t-shirt, its less harsh on your hair; limit pony tails since that can lead to damage.

My hair is normally about the middle of my back, I trimmed it today, about 1 1/2 inches, its still long, curly, and fine. I'm gentle with it and I colour it on a semi-regular basis [every 2 or 3 months], and its very healthy. I use a hair mask once a week or every other week, you can also, use regular conditioner, work it through yr hair, put a shower cap on and 'blast' it with the hair dryer, or, go outside and read in the run for a while. The heat makes it penetrate deep into the cutical and helps prevent damage. Rince well afterwards, with cool water.

Enjoy the longer hair.

This sounds like good advice - mine is always tangled and takes a lot of sorting after its been tied up. (yes, it is all my own hair, in case anyone wondered....)

I mainly put mine in a pony tail for bed - its easier to move round in bed with my hair tied up. Question though is - what else could I do with it (if not a pony tail) to keep it under control for sleeping?

PS - Pepper (one of my two kitties) wants to be a hairdresser it seems! She climbs onto my shoulder every morning after breakfast and has a go with my locks; I get groomed every morning!

nyrisa -> RE: Hair care for long hair...Hair maintenance (7/18/2007 2:45:41 AM)

I recently had surgery on the back of my neck, so my husband braided my hair into two braids each night to keep it out of the way. It kept it from tangling, and I liked the rippling waves the braids left in it. You might try tying the ends with ribbon instead of using a rubber band. You can also get the little soft Scunci things, that are fabric wrapped and keep the elastic from touching the hair.

camille65 -> RE: Hair care for long hair...Hair maintenance (7/18/2007 2:50:11 AM)

I do a scrunchy right on the very top of my head, Pebbles style lol when I sleep.
As to healthy ends, I am not one for good advice cuz mine are not so healthy. I've super hard well water.
Try combing from the bottom moving up to the crown at the end not the beginning.
Chia da pet? If I send you pics can you tell me how to get my hair chopped off? Dunno wot to do with it!!

pianogirl -> RE: Hair care for long hair...Hair maintenance (7/18/2007 5:05:04 AM)

My hair has finally reached my mid back, having grown 6 inches in December.  I too have my hair colored, and I use the Garnier Fructus line - the Long and Strong.  its wonderful.  I avoid blowdrying my hair as much as possible, and when I have to, I tip upside down and just use my fingers - I find it drys much quicker that way without the stress a brush puts on it.

Lady E - try a regular braid or a french braid.  I'm a side sleeper so frenches work really well for me.  There is a brand of ouchless elastics (they are actually stretchy plastic) - great for UMs and us older girls as well.  The benefit is that they are so cheap they are designed to simply be sniped with a small pair of scissors - the ending the pulling, tangling that regular elastics bring

jayded34 -> RE: Hair care for long hair...Hair maintenance (7/18/2007 5:22:17 AM)

I am 5ft 2 in tall and my hair reaches my just above my butt........so i would have to say its about 2.5ft long.  I never color my hair......I never blow dry or straighten my hair. I simply wash it with whatever shampoo is on sale that week......use a light conditioner on it and sleep in a ponytail every night.  I get it trimmed about every 4 months......but for me a trim is more like a major haircut for most people, last time i had it cut the girl took about 6-7 inches off......i dont have much trouble with dryness and since i had the female surgery that put me in menopause earlier this year i dont have the oilys anymore either. My hair is heavy and thick but fine in nature so when it is humid out i get a case of the frizzies but generally its very straight.  I am 42 and have threatend to cut my hair really short more times than i can count but as Chia said "My hair is my crowning glory" and i love the way it looks and feels against my skin, and I dont think Himself would like me to cut it either.
The best advice i have to care for your hair is to put the least amount of stress on it as you can......eat healthy and moisturize
it as you do your skin.

Enjoy your longer hair and remeber these 2 words........."hair bondage"!  *giggles*

On a related note... can anyone (Chia?) recommend a good technique, and/or the right tools to use, for brushing tangles out of someone else's long, straight hair without hurting them? i would love to be able to brush my wife's hair for her from time to time, but i can't seem to do it without hurting her [:(] Since i'm always in a hurry in the mornings, i tend to just tear through tangles in my own hair, which certainly harms it, and that isn't acceptable when taking care of her.

Lashra -> RE: Hair care for long hair...Hair maintenance (7/18/2007 7:00:48 AM)

My hair is actually baby fine and I have a huge problem with it getting tangled when I shower. Here lately when I try to brush it I have these huge knots in it and me being impatient I usually end up ripping out a lot of hair. I can't use creme rinses as they make my hair just flop because its so soft. Is there anything out there I can use to get rid of the tangles so I don't end up ripping my hair out but won't make it so soft I can't do anything with it?

Thanks,
~Lashra

The important thing to remember when pulling the hair up or back or placing it
in braids or pig or pony tails, is never pull too tight, always leave a little slack.
If pulled tightly constantly, the more fragile hair around the hairline can suffer
breakage. If you always notice short little pieces of hair around the hairline,
ease up on the pulling back.

camille 65, sure, a lot depends on face shape, texture and density of hair,
and what you are willing to do to maintain a particular style. i'll offer
any suggestions i can.

A wide toothed comb and a good leave in conditioner or detangler, and getting
up earlier so as not to be in a rush, tearing is not a good word for hair. Be patient
with small sections of hair, working from the bottom up, holding the hair firm so
as to cushion the pull from the scalp, usually the nape area suffers the most from
tangles, and the nape area is sensitive, so take extra care there.

Dear Lashra, using a detangler in the shower vs a conditioner will help, though
You should condition at least twice a week. The rule with fine hair, is that
less is more, use the detangler away from the scalp, and rinse, rinse, rinse.
This will allow the product to work and will remove any excess which will
weigh down the hair. Mousse for volume only at the root when styling,
avoiding putting product on the shaft and ends which will make the hair
heavy. Flip over and dry the hair always going with the strand for volume,
just blowing the hair causing it to fly everywhere will cause the cuticle to
tangle giving You frizz. Good luck.

I'm having a problem with my hair falling out at the roots lately...I don't know what started it, but about 9 months ago, it started really falling out ...if I move, brush it (gently), wash it..what ever.  I asked my gyne about it during my exam and he did hormone and thyroid tests...all normal.  I go to a dermatologist next month about it, but in the meantime, I've cut it above shoulder length to help stop it running into anything that would pull it.  I miss the hair pull!    Any clues?  I haven't changed my shampoo or conditioner for years, or diet for that matter.  Just 3 weeks ago someone suggested more protein in my diet, so I'm doing that.

I've always had thick, dense long hair...now it's so light and thin.  yikes!

ladyleopard945 -> RE: Hair care for long hair...Hair maintenance (7/18/2007 7:33:36 AM)

you might consider changing your hair care products....It is called build up and can cause problems.

Just a thought I have had problems like that before.

Ease up on the hair pulling, no matter the love of such. Hair can be dislodged
from the hair bulb if pulled hard enough. Start using the Nioxin line of hair
products, they assure the optimum healthy scalp for hair growth. Prenatal
vitamins wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Lashra, try putting on the conditioner first in the shower, comb out all the tangles (I use a pick or a vent brush), then shampoo your hair.  the shampoo will take away most of the conditioner and your hair will still be relatively tangle-free.

angelthighhighs -> RE: Hair care for long hair...Hair maintenance (7/18/2007 7:46:02 AM)

i have hair down to the middle of my butt.  everyone has commented on how healthy it looks,  even had people i didn't know come up to me in store and tell me.  i rarely use coloring on it although i will at times and then its the type without amonia in it.  i also use Herbal Essence moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and their one for full body.  i switch them off every so often.  i know i should trim my hair more often but i've been pretty lucky with not having many split ends.
