Sirus -> I am looking to buy a digital camera (6/22/2005 3:26:25 PM)

Any ideas?

I can't make up my mind between getting the smallest and thinnest camera possible or getting something with a real lens on it.
either way I would be taking it apart there is something that I want to modify, and a more professional camera would make that much easier as well as easier to return to stock.

even so I am leaning toward a small camera and would just deal with the disassembly difficulties.
Oh also I would like one that works well in low light.

I can't fully understand what you're saying here (because there obviously are some words missing), but do you mean that you plan to buy a camera, take it apart, modify it, and return it to the store?

there are no missing words that I can see (punctuation maybe) I just said it in a way that probably wasn't the best. By return it to stock I mean change it later back into a regular camera (stock condition). No I don't mean return it to the store.
I plan on removing the non-visible light filter and using my own, but I want a regular camera too so if it was really easy to change back and forth that would be great.

You want a 35 mm camera that converts to a digital camera? I suggest talking to your local camera shop. IF it even exists. Not saying it doesn't just haven't heard of it yet.

On a different yet similar note I recently bought a mini dvd camcorder. It also is a digital camera...takes still pics.

I have a Small thin Camera.
I found that just because that it is a small camera
{3 mega pixels 4 times zoom}
Does not mean the resolution is good.

You probablly better off buying like a $200 Canon
or something simular.

I paid $65 it looked good, untill I took pictures.

I have a pentax optio 5.0 megapixel. Paid WAY TOO MUCH MONEY for it a couple of years ago.
Although I love it still today. It has its own little rechargable battery. Never have to buy batteries.
But, it has no lens to remove. It basially is a digicam...thats it.

You cannot convert it to be anything else.

Anymore you can buy a basic digital camera for 20.00 although I would'nt recommend it. If you want to see your pictures anyway. The more megapixels the clearer the shot.

I am really sorry if I am a little hard to understand. I was quite skimpy with details.

No not a 35mm. I mean I want a plain old digital camera, It's just that models with changeable lens would be easier to modify, basically I want to take out a little piece of glass thats in all digital cameras that filters out non-visible light so I can tune it to different spectrums. I can do this with ANY digital camera ever made but it's a lot easier with some then others.
I'm thinking of spending around $200 - $250

MagicKnots -> RE: I am looking to buy a digital camera (6/23/2005 3:10:32 PM)

There are many new digital cameras out in the market that have interchangeable lenses. However, you probably won't be happy with the results for $200 to $250. I'm in love with my digital camera. It's a Nikon Coolpix 995 and is excellent in low light. Your best bet is to search yahoo (Yahoo Search) or google with "changeable lens digital camera comarison" and you'll find a dozen "guide" sites that will line up all the cameras on the market and give you a price break down.

Best of luck, there's a zillion choices in the world today!

Canon do a digital with interchangable lens and option to remove said lens, but you would be looking into taking your $250 and multiply by 10, unfortunately. The cameras with the opition you want do exist, but they are in their high hundred to thousands(in dollars). They are rare, but becoming easier to obtain. My friend purchased on ebay a 14mega PIXEL on ebay for way over £1,500 a couple of months back with said option and that was second hand.

Peace and Love

MagicKnots: Well as I can see from your wonderful photo shoot in the forum your camera with the aid of your fine picture taking skill produces some great shots.
A very quick search on ebay lead me to this cheapy FUJI FINEPIX S5000 22x ZOOM DIGITAL CAMERA which is below what I want in the megapixel area but is close to what I would want otherwise. I am taking a small trip in a few weeks and I would like to get a decent camera before then, I may just settle on a compact one for the sake of my wallet.

SirKenin -> RE: I am looking to buy a digital camera (6/23/2005 6:09:46 PM)

I sell digital cameras, and I own two Myself. I would highly recommend either a Canon S60 or S70. They are a little bit pricey, but they take remarkably good pictures. They use the Canon lenses. I paid $800 for My S30 and I would not trade it for anything. It has plenty of settings on it for every type of condition you can think of, and you can print off an 8 1/2 x 11 on glossy paper without any loss in quality. Stay far away from these Kodaks.. They are junk. Any camera under $2-300 is not worth bothering with for the discerning photographer. There are a couple of Cyber-shot models in the Sony lineup that are really good as well. The Olympus models are supposed to be good, but I do not sell those and thus I can not make a good recommendation.

I second that. When they first came out I bought my dom a Kodak. Didn't work from the time we took it out of the box.....4 cameras later the old Kodak is still having memory issues.
Basically that was about 400 down the drain. After so many problems and new cameras we just got tired of dealing with it.
I imagine those ones on Ebay are reburbished. Stay far away.

Sirus -> RE: I am looking to buy a digital camera (6/24/2005 1:33:43 PM)

Ok I decided that transportability is the biggest factor for me, so I just got a Cannon Sd 200. paid about $230 I'm not a major artist or anything so I think it will be great, I'm gonna test its low light ability tonight. I took a couple pics of my cat and some flowers in my yard and they look really clear on my screen, I don't plan on printing any out on paper.

I do print a pic now and then. When I first started out I bought the right printer...etc.
HP, well I could print about 10 pics with a 50 dollar ink cartridge. Then modern technology took care of that for me...at my 13th month the HP died.
Bought a Lexmark because I had one for almost ten years before windows upgraded me out of it and they stopped making drivers...at 13 months again...well.
Just bought a Brother last month. So far I love it. It has a little slot to insert the memory card. I got smart too, bought a 5 year warranty on it this time.

Anyway, what I am trying to say is..depending on your printer it could cost you more than it does to have them professionally printed.
I use shutterfly.com or kodakgalleries.com
Generally I pay about 15 cents a print. They always have sales if you're on their mailing list. Sometimes you just want that real picture.

onuris -> RE: I am looking to buy a digital camera (7/17/2005 12:34:01 AM)

Digital photography and photochopping.. er.. shopping have been a hobby of mine for about a year now. Since then I've gone through a couple digital cameras: small point-and-shoots to high end digital cameras to digital SLRs. All I do is self taught so I'm afraid I can't supply you with any technical information except from personal experience.

Point and shoots simply won't hack it if you plan on having any form of control over your photographs. That, and you don't have any room for accessories (except for lense adapters which will most likely reduce the quality of your images). Their "simple" user interfaces are in my opinion counter-intuitive. Who wants to press 6 buttons to change the ISO emulation?

I then moved to the Sony DSC-F717. It's not a digital SLR, but it takes excellent photos. It also has infra red capabilities as well as IR-assisted autofocusing for focusing in complete darkness. Nifty feature. My only problem with the camera was that it was only compatible with Sony flashes.

I now shoot with a Nikon D70. It's an excellent digital SLR and takes super high resolution pictures. It allows you to replace the lense which leaves a lot of doors open for the future. A digital SLR will obviously cost more than something like the Sony but in my personal opinion it's absolutely worth it. Digital Rebels are now down to what.. $650? Not bad considering that's what the Sony cost brand new.

In the end it's up to you but I highly recommend picking up a digital SLR, especially if you plan on modifying the camera. Being able to remove the lense without breaking the warranty is a plus! Also, incase anyway reading doesn't understand what a SLR is, it means you actually see through the lense when you look through the viewfinder rather than see what's coming off the chip. It's purely optical - no camera lag, and no problems manually focusing in low lighting.

Hopefully this link will help you. Dpreview does extensive research on almost every digital camera complete with user feedback:

If you're interested in checking out some of my photography, my website is www.genesis.gs. Most of those pictures were taken with the Sony mentioned above (and then butchered in photoshop, bwaha!). Good luck on your purchase! [;)]
