what are some of the factors you look at when choosing a knife for knife play? I have heard curved blades are best, but I also know those that use streight blades. I have also had someone go into the grades of steel, He told me to avoid two types of 440 stainless (ah, crap was it A, B, or C that he said was OK?) then I have heard that the type of stainless didnt matter as long as it was stainless. One knife in particular that was recommended to me was the "Karambit" pictured here http://www.coldsteel.com/nise.html It's blade isnt even metal, so I am concerned about the ability to clean it (scratch that I think that a knife would be best used on one person only. I am sure there are crevicies on any folder that could hold small amouts of blood) Thanks in advance for help Phin

It all depends on what you are using the knife for. Intimidation, anything scary looking and rather dull especially if they bring about images of bloodshed (machettes, katanas, kukris, etc). Cutting, I prefer a good curve at the tip. Bit of warning, you will need to resharpen the blade after every session since even cutting skin, they dull quickly and the level of pain escalates. As far as concern about blood, really nothing short of an autoclave is going to have it sanitary to be used on a second person hence why scalpels are preferred for cuttings.

Ahh, if just running across the skin then same as intimidation but for added sense, see about getting one with lots of curves like this. http://www.mwart.com/xq/ASP.product/pid.2955/qx/alien-fantasy-knife.htm Serrations on one side can give you more diversity to the play without having to change knives.

Would your 'subject' be able to see the knife or is it for the 'feel' of it only? Cus if part of the impact will be visual, you need to get with her as to whether or not there's anything she finds more or less intimidating in a knife. I don't personally find curved blades as intimidating as some others, but then again I've actually collected bladed weapons and have preferences.

If multiple sensations are brought in, I might also recommend getting either a steel sharpener or a long whetstone. Even if the knife is dull (and is meant to be), the sound of a blade scraping slowly across the stone or the rhythmic rasping of steel is just intimidating when you know you'll feel it soon. In any case, I'd recommend a heavier knife for sensation play - unlike cutting knives where very delicate control is paramount, you can afford to have a bit less wieldy of a knife here, and the added weight can make it more versatile - it'll hold temperature longer, double as a paddle, and so forth.

i don't know about anyone else but i like going down to the flea market and see what kind of fun knives they have there...cheap, hands on, and usually they buy in bulk so you can weed thru and find their best one...last time i went to the flea market near my church i found a booth of an old army vet...he's pretty cool...just sit around and talk about blades...i think he might have been kinky too....

Oh my! such delicious objects. IMHO any type of knife can work well for sensation play. The mind fuck is half the game with knife play anyway so go for what makes you happy. Play with it, get the feel of it as you manipulate it and let it feel like an extension of your hand. When you love your knife then it does not matter what type it is....little bitty boot knife, big ass machete and everything in between....it will serve you well.

Integrated handles, I prefer full tang cut from a single bar stock for cleanability. Beyond that I really have ballanced in my hand as the primary thing I look for. The edge can be sharpened or dulled after the fact to suit your needs.

Thanks all to the post I think that I will go with a couple of knives the one I linked to in the OP will probably be one of them... aparootsa, you have some good sugestions that I had not thought of, thanks alot the sharpener will defanatly be a buy...

if your proficient with knives it doesnt really matter as long as it feels good in your hand. i have a ton of knives i use regularly from single blades up to 6 blded knives. it also helps if you know the person your playing with. i give demo's with them and still the risks are high for cuts unless its called for.i never use dull knives and each and every time i use one i carefully check them for burrs and disinfect them before each use as well as after each use for they may be used on more than one in any given nite but unlikely.

One of my fellas is a hand to hand combat specialist and trainer in the military and he is a fan of the Karambit - never goes anywhere without one. He finds it utilitarian and extremely combat worthy. As to whether it will solicit the desired effect - I don't know - he uses it very much not for effect but means total business. I have talked him out of it on occassion and found it to be quit well balanced and put together very well. It has nooks and crannies but nothing so tight that cleaning is not fairly practical. However,a classic Bowie or big kitchen knife to me has the best mind fuck potential - but I think the person who said try and find out subtly what type of blade would be scary to your particular play partner will garner the best results. A great for the money stainless kitchen knife is the Chicago Cutlery brand - you can find them at places as common as Target. I was a pro chef till recently and there are other kitchen knives that are better but for the money the Chicago is quite amazing. They have wooden handles - according to the kitchen sanitary world the new studies show that wood does better than plastic and less porous materials because you can give it a dousing in bleach etc and then when it dries out bacteria is killed. Cutting boards used to be plastic but now wood is preferred again by the health board.

Master uses a nasty looking knife he bought at a dive shop. It looks the part, but the blade is actually quite dull. The pointed tip is great for scoring the skin, and it is rust proof. It came with its own scabbard to buckle to the leg. It wasn't very expensive and we've had it for years. :)) LH

My mistress loves the exact type of knife play you're talking about - running the blade over the body/skin without actually cutting. she has quite a collection ranging from "rambo" style combat knives, rifle bayonetts, to medieval daggers. once particualrly scary one - for me at least is a dagger with a wavy blade. I think its called a kriss dagger. Theres another one she has with a very weird blade shapr, lots of sweeping cutting edges and narrow points and the handle has a metal gaurd over the fingers which is studded with long metal spikes. the handle itself is very pretty, actually, its made of layes of wood which are stained red, green, yellow, and blue and gives it a kind of rainbow effect.

Most knifes with a stainless steel blade do not seem to take a cutting edge and look cool,some better knifes are exceptions. Stay away from carbon steel like you a meatcutter uses they can get shaving sharp.

I have a set of butterfly knives I use for sensation play. They're inexpensive, they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and if you learn to open them properly they make a great snikt sound that's wonderful psycologically once you've trained them to know what it means! Also, they're made entirely of stainless from tip to end, and thus can be submerged in disinfectant despite having nooks and crannies. My favorite is a 5-inch blade (which means slightly more than 10 inches unfolded) which is black and wavy, leading to a nice backwards curve at the tip. I love the welts it leaves!

Steel sharpens and dulls with about the same difficulty, If it sharpens easily and well it will dull easly and quickly, Soft steel shapens quickly, but does not hold the edge for long. Hard steel sharpens with more difficulty and holds that edge for longer. Stainless generally is more difficult to sharpen and requires more skill to sharpen well, but once that edge is on there it will last for alot longer than a softer steel. As with so many things in life it's a trade off.
