In your mind (a Mistress) what is a fair exchange rate for bartering professional work for service time?

I have been asked by many and have offered my services to many in exchange for each others skills.  But there is never an easy middle ground.

I am a Master Carpenter, with over 20 years in building furniture and homes.  When I offer my services to Mistresses they feel my skills as worthless, though they do need them I should offer them in thier honor.

Well, sorry, we all need to make a living or a fair rate of echange.  For example, lets take a St. Andrews Cross, very basic in design, yet can be custom made to many desires.

A basic design sells for around $300 with nothing but wood from a large box store and simple joinery techiques.  Nothing special but it does the job.

Mine sells for around $600, made from exotic wood of furniture grade, fixtures are hand crafted, and the finish far exceeds anything you can get from local hardware store.

Now what is the value?  I have my cost for materails, we are talking about and exchange of time.  What is fair?

i guess on a business level you are right. A pound for pound exchange, at whatever the going rate for that particular job. However i think some submissives would hope to have an exchange on a more informal level. Such as doing the cleaning in exchange for being allowed to wear a maids uniform and then maybe get spanked for any infringements.

Like everything else, whats normal will only be normal between the two parties involved.

Ask a MISTRESS section doesn't mean submissives are silent. If someone asks a question here, anyone that has an opinion will try to help. However, with the attitude you've just displayed, you're probably not going to get too many responses, even from the Mistresses from whom you ONLY seem to feel are capable of commenting on your thread. Honestly, pissing off the base core of the message group doesn't do a lot of good to integrate yourself into the community. You essentially insulted someone who was trying to help you.

In the end, it doesn't matter what we think is fair. It's what YOU think is fair. If you're not getting a good barter, it will not be a fulfilling exchange for you, so why do it?

You're right.  We can all learn from your wisdom.

I was just tring to find a common ground, with an issue I was having.  I have had many Pro and Lifesytle Dommes demand free work in exchange for nothing.  I was looking for what others thought

thetammyjo -> RE: Bartering business for service (7/18/2007 1:19:05 PM)

I'm clear completely clear here.

Are you offering to make equipment for specific individuals?

If so, do you contact them or do they contact you?

If this is a business then I'd suggest looking at similar goods and setting your prices to be competitive.

Ok, if they contact you, then you are in the business model -- tell them the price, they don't like it, ignore them.

If they wish to barter and they are pros then learn what they charge per hour and demand the amount of hours worth the amount of labor you put into the equipment. Again, they don't like it, they can get their equipment elsewhere.

nikkicd10 -> RE: Bartering business for service (7/18/2007 1:31:18 PM)

It has been both, people have seen my ads and asked for free furniture and some I have offered to build in exchange of services.

Though when I offer an exchange I am offered the least in exchanged value, (that being what they charge per hour verses the cost of the

i wasnt in the wrong place. Its a public forum. There is no ask a male submissive section, more is the pity. You should see how pissy they got when i replied in the Gorean section...lol

On a serious note, i was chatting to someone on another thread about battering. i can do several things along the line of general building maintenance. You need to ask yourself if what You receive in the batter meets Your view of the value of Your work. If it doesnt then treat it as a business deal and pay the normal rate anyone else would pay.

LOL  I hear that, I meant no offense.  Just a dumb comment, I was just looking for the Mistresses point of view on the exchange is all

Politesub53 -> RE: Bartering business for service (7/18/2007 1:55:42 PM)

No offense taken..... i`m used to getting told off..... [:D]

goddessAVA -> RE: Bartering business for service (7/18/2007 2:49:05 PM)

I was going to say that you are a jackass but you seemed to have cooled down.  As both a pro and lifestyle Domme, I have been given many beautiful toys, pieces of equipment, fetish wear etc......was it in exchange for sessions-no, toys are fun but they do not pay the overhead.  Instead, these gifts come from people I really liked playing with and had fun with-I pretty much play with the same boys over and over-it keeps getting better that way!  I did get a gorgeous cross from one of them, then there was the bed, medical table, cage..........If I was approached, especially the way you sound in your op, I'd have no interest in you at all.  It sounds like you are trying to avoid using cash.
btw, I do not see my D/s relationships as 50/50 I am the majority stockolder in ALL cases, there would never be an even exchange labor for my time.

Is this something to do with fish and chips Politesub53 or are you more dangerous than you look? lol

nikkicd10 -> RE: Bartering business for service (7/18/2007 3:28:36 PM)

In most cases it is when they contacted me.  Just take a good  look around the ads on CM and see how many "Mistress " demand" something for their honor, if your a Pro Domme, it's business no more no less..

I was just asking a general question about when one is asked in providing this type of service.

nikkicd10 -> RE: Bartering business for service (7/18/2007 3:32:35 PM)

Being 'given" something is far cry from demanding something for nothing.

ifyouarelucky -> RE: Bartering business for service (7/18/2007 4:12:14 PM)

Ive never posted here before, even though Ive been a member on collarme for sometime.. after reading this I couldnt resist. I definetely agree with Ava! A barter is a transaction in which to save cash, in My opinion anyway - I would be instantly turned off if any slave were to contact Me asking to trade "services" or skills. I dont consider Myself a ProDomme as I couldnt put on price on My time with My slaves/subs - Often times a Mistress has to demand something for her time as afterall...nothing is free. Most of My gifts have come from subs beig generous and showing their respect and adoration. Its not a flea market or a swap fest here kids! [;)]

Politesub53 -> RE: Bartering business for service (7/18/2007 4:19:23 PM)

Stella......im done for... i meant barter as you know. Guess i need be more careful next time i visit the chip shop. [:D]

Politesub53 -> RE: Bartering business for service (7/18/2007 4:33:01 PM)

With respect some Mistress`s profiles state they will indulge in play in exchange for someone doing jobs. If it suits both parties i dont see the harm. So what if a barter saves cash, it save cash for both parties, by that i mean the Mistress gets a job done that needs doing and the slave gets to play.
