There are great every kind of restaurant in Chicago.  That's all we do here...EAT!

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: what would U see if u visit chicago? (7/19/2007 7:47:56 PM)

I want to go up there to find a good tapas place.

bandit25 -> RE: what would U see if u visit chicago? (7/19/2007 7:51:21 PM)

There's one in Evanston...I think it's on Chicago Avenue.  If you want me to find out, mail me on the other side.

some good comments. some of the northside thrift stores sound good- as well as http://www.dusablemuseum.org/g/visit/

i wanted to see the broadcast museum- but it is closed due to renovation!

domiguy -> RE: what would U see if u visit chicago? (7/19/2007 9:01:29 PM)

This is definitely the time to get into Chicago....This is when the city is hopping....A zillion things to do...The Domidong is in full bloom this time of year and is quite a spectacle to take in....Cub games....A must.....The Museums,  the lake front which has I believe has the longest set of  bike paths along the lakefront of Lake Michigan...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycling_in_Chicago

Now the bars....Whoa...Of course if you live in Chicago, Rush street does not hold quite the allure than if you are coming in from out of town...Still there are those Summer afternoons/evenings that you have to take in a drink or twenty at such destination as Melvin B's....Then maybe make your way over to Butch McGuires and end up till 4:00 am at The Lodge.
http://www.chicagobarproject.com/Reviews/MelvinB's/MelvinB's.htm

http://www.chicagobarproject.com/Reviews/Lodge/Lodge.htm

If cock happens to be the name of the game then obviously you are probably going to have to make a trip into boys town....There is a night club/bar that is hetero friendly but it's clientèle is predominantly gay that we have enjoyed on several occasions...The Kit Kat Club.

http://www.kitkatchicago.com/  .....It is a great place, good food...Tasty beverages...Nice folks and tremendous entertainment.

Being that I am somewhat of a beer geek when not punishing subsusie I would recommend checking out The Map Room...Check out the number of beers on tap and in bottles...Yummy. http://www.maproom.com/

All of the museums are top notch ...The Dusable Museum is probably one of the more recent....But is incredibly awe inspiring to walk through.

Too much to do and see....Dining out...Outdoor cafés, wine bars....Also there are also some crack Ho's if you are on a budget.

Edited to add....PaHunk I wish I could have been of more help....

The natural history museum is the Field, Katy, and it is incredible.  Anytime...just let me know and I'll pick you up at O'Hare (that's an airport, for those not in the know).

Emperor1956 -> RE: what would U see if u visit chicago? (7/19/2007 10:14:10 PM)

Hmmmm.   What should you see?  Well, I love this town.  And I've written architectural tours, been a tour guide, and am a freak for all sorts of things.  Besides what's been posted, here's what I show friends:

In no particular order:

The actual spot where:

-the Chicago fire began (its now a CFD training school...no joke!)

-the first controlled nuclear reaction took place (in the middle of the U of Chicago Campus)

-John Dillinger was captured....and shot....and died (3 long steps outside the Biograph Theater on the North Side)

- the Untouchables famous "stairway and baby buggy" scene was filmed

- Anything Al Capone.

-The largest public waterworks project in history was created (reversing the flow of the Chicago river)  ... and on St. Paddy's day, we dye it green.

-a colony of tropical parrots that have adapted and flourished from a mating pair let loose in the 1960s -- they survive the Chicago winter...tough birds.

-The Haymarket Bombing took place

- The 1968 Democratic convention riots took place, including where Claes Oldenburg got hit with a baseball bat, and Mayor Daley (the First) gave the "shoot to kill" order.

- The Nation of Islam was born

- The 56 to 61 (actual number unknown) circus performers and workers were buried after the great Hagenbeck-Wallace circus train wreck of 1918, marked by five stone elephants.

-The tootsie roll was invented....and the tinker toy

- That "car spike" featured in Wayne's World sits  (its coming down soon!)

- The Eastland turned over in the Chicago river one lovely summer day in 1915, just a few feet from the shore, horribly overloaded with 2500 people, resulting in the deaths of over 800 people, and the complete extinction of 22 families.

- Frank Lloyd Wright worked and built the largest collection of his residences (about 1 block from my house).

- more pork bellies are traded than anywhere else in the world  (The largest commodities market in the world --the trading floors are a real trip, but since 9/11 you need clearance to get there...I got it)

- The Iroquois Theater burned down, killing more than 600 people and creating the drive to mandate modern fire and safety codes

- The spot where a careless construction accident pierced the wall of the river, and caused the entire downtown to flood UNDER the surface of the city, knocking out most of the city's business services for 5 days...in an invisible flood

So let me know when y'all are coming.

E.

I love Chicago! I used to live there for a while.
There are many great things that I sought out to see when there.
All the usual tourist sights and landmarks.
I have to say though I loved all the fountains that Chicago has, my favorite place to go was the North Hampton area and my favorite place to shop and I will go there everytime I visit is "The Alley" that is the coolest store ever!

SDFemDom4cuck -> RE: what would U see if u visit chicago? (7/19/2007 10:27:07 PM)

For me it would have to include a stop in at Buddy Guy's Legends,  The Green Mill, The Checkerboard or Kingston Mines. Although if you're going to The Checkerboard you definitely want to be careful. The neighborhood wasn't the best place to be last time I was there. I'm sure any of the Chicagoans could tell you if that's still true.

Edited to add. I cant' believe I forgot all about the plethora of Frank Lloyd Wright residences. I'll be out in Sept. for an evening before heading south for a wedding. [;)]

DomKen -> RE: what would U see if u visit chicago? (7/19/2007 11:02:35 PM)

Home Sweet Home.

When visitors come a calling I always take them down to Hyde Park. A picnic directly over the site of the first man made controlled nuclear reaction is always fun, especially if you cover the marker up with the picnic basket or something till after lunch. No worries though it is safe.

Then it is a short walk to a park where some of the little green parrokeets live in their big nest. These little green guys are much loved by the residents of the neighborhood. Most all the birds, except pigeons which don't count, fly south for the winter but not these little guys. They tough it out just like the rest of us.

The Museum of Science and Industry is also nearby and can be a lot of fun based on what traveling exhibit is in town.

Next is the Loop. A trip to the top of the Sears Tower is great fun. The Art Institute, not museum, will let you see one of the more famous paintings in America, American Gothic. If the visitors timing is good there may be a free music/food fest in the parks immediately east of the Art Institute. Early summer is the Blues fest. Around the July 4th holiday is both Country music fest and Taste of Chicago, a people watching and food trying experience second to none. Finally come labor day it's time for Jazz fest. A little more east and just a tad south of the fests is the museum campus. Home of the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium. All three are well worth spending some time in and if the weather is good there are few better spots to look at the skyline from.

Continuing north is Oak St and North Ave. beaches and the Lincoln Park zoo. The beaches are very nice and provide for lots of eye candy for those inclined to enjoy such. The zoo is free. People from elsewhere seem shocked by this but there is no admission fee and IIRC the only time you need money is for refreshments. This isn't some run down dump either it has a spectacular primate house and a mated pair of cheetahs that almost always seem to rearing a litter of cubs when I go.

Further north you get to Belmont ave. where you can pretty safely let your kinky side hang out. A nice fetish boutique is right near the corner of Belmont and Clark along with a couple of other shops in the 'alternative shopping district' called the Alley. Boystown is just a block or so east at Halsted. Ever wanted to have an adult beverage while watching a movie in a theater? The Vic theater does in fact serve beer and drinks while showing movies in a nice old theater. just 2 blocks west of Belmont and Clark.

Want to watch the overserved frat boy in the wild? Want to watch a baseball game in the best stadium anywhere? Want to sit close enough to the field you can chat with the bullpen pitchers? 4 blocks north of Belmont and Clark is Clark and Addison where you'll find Wrigley Field. If you love baseball you must see a game in Wrigley. I've heard rumors that baseball is played elsewhere in the city but those rumors indicate the game is played by some strange rules involving more than 9 players so I've not bothered investigating them.

Do you have a favorite cuisine? I'll bet anyone that Chicago has a top notch restaurant serving that cuisine. There are too many clubs and bars to even begin to describe but suffice it to say that there'll be one that caters to your style of music or other interest.

Yes, we even have fetish clubs. Including the successor to the old Leathe Rose now only a couple of blocks from my apartment.

Can you tell I like Chicago?

And as I am sure Emperor knows, there are some wonderful walking tour books of Chicago.  I happen to have three of them.  Two are famous crime scenes and one is a walking guide to the mystery writers of Chicago.  I walked one of the tours about two years ago.  Now I've lived here all my life and I saw things I had never seen before.  Of course, I had heard of Oz Park but never been there.  I bet I spent over 4 hours reading the yellow brick road.  And those historical row houses at dePaul!  I didn't even know they were there.  I went to Loyola.  Damn!  I am walking another tour this weekend.  Anyone want to come along?

I am getting my list together for Sept, Master and I are taking the train in.

Anything that has to do with the mob.

Any history museum.

Any art museum.

The aquarium (sp?).

I have been told we won't stay in much, and to wear comfortable shoes.  I cannot wait!

Heck you whould hang with Tonya and I for a day....    :-)

pahunkboy -> RE: what would U see if u visit chicago? (7/20/2007 6:24:17 AM)

some brilliant ideas!!!   i love the off the beaten path stuff! [as I grew up in Chicago, and explored many of the standard attractions]

Last night I got full confirmation  that my house-sitter will handle my place. I told her - the tv-computer- everything- enjoy the place here.

The fact that I am meeting Tonya adds to the excitement. We connect as tho we known eachother our whole life- she has me laughing like wild=- I havnt laughted that hard over the phone.

I very much need to have plan A; as my family will be busy- which aside from my mom- the family is practically a plan B.

MOm moved away to Chicago in February. I need to see with my own eyes that she is ok. and vice versa.

My brother and I are on/off.  My sister wants me to be at her babies christianing- and me there yet she ignores my calls. But that is city life.

I want to see 3 of my old friends before they pass away..... too. They were/are role models.

kick-azz advice folks!!!!!! TY

bliss1 -> RE: what would U see if u visit chicago? (7/20/2007 8:25:06 AM)

The first thing I would see is the Musem of Science and Industry again  (love that jeweled doll house)

Give me a few hours in the art musceum (shit I can't spell that word today at all).

A day to just walk on the beach.

And lots of evenings to enjoy the new places to eat that were not there the last time I was in town.
