For me it would have to include a stop in at Buddy Guy's Legends,  The Green Mill, The Checkerboard or Kingston Mines. Although if you're going to The Checkerboard you definitely want to be careful. The neighborhood wasn't the best place to be last time I was there. I'm sure any of the Chicagoans could tell you if that's still true.

Sorry I missed this last night.

The Checkerboard has moved. It's now in a shopping center at 52nd and Harper which being in Hyde Park is a lot less dodgy than the old location.

For me the Green Mill is still the best combination of atmosphere and great live music in the city.

My personal favorite spot is the peninsula from The Shedd Aquarium to the Planetarium.  Great view of downtown, Navy Pier, and the marina.

The Art Institute of Chicago is a must see, even if you're not an art "fan".

The Field Museum, MSI, and the Shedd Aquarium are now all fee-based.  That is why they were not contained within the link the original poster left.

There are scores of excellent restaurants and clubs in Chicago, if that's your thing.  Chinatown is small, but interesting.  Interesting food and shops.  I'm a sucker for hard candy from Japan and such.

The Billy Goat is tremendously overrated, and there are many tourist trap places with mediocre food.

Don't get suckered into "ghost" trips either.  Bus tours are expensive AND still lame.

*EDIT* My Bad, I didnt follow the link until after I posted this message.  That link DOES list the museums FREE days...

Duly noted to keep in mind for my visit in Sept. I would have been doubly upset to arrive at the original location and find it wasn't there any longer. Thank you.

Buddy Guy's Legends will be closing soon - Columbia College owns the property and will be using the space.

well, PA, are you all packed and ready to paint the town rainbow with me?

Augghhh. Nooo. How could they? That's such a shame. Are they at least thinking of moving it elsewhere. It's an institution.

Uh...A few things.  Not to be too pedantic, but lets set the record straight.  There is a ton of misinformation posted above.

FIRST,  BUDDY GUY'S IS NOT CLOSING, at least not in the forseeable future.   Buddy is looking for a new place, but he's got bookings in the club til the end of September.  (SEPT 1, the Holmes Brothers!   What's so funny about peace, love and understanding....ooooh....   But I digress.)

The "New Checkerboard Lounge" is in a tony shopping mall known as "Harper Court" about 3 blocks from the U of Chicago campus.  Its very much upscaled.  Frankly it is yuppy, buppy and touristy, but still fun.

The Green Mill is still the Green Mill thank God.

I don't mean to be critical, BUT why don't any of you so called music reviewers mention two of the greatest clubs in Chicago?  Its not like they are hidden -- one is 21 years old, and the other 36!  I'm talking about Andy's and Kingston Mines.  Andy's is in a great location for tourists (on Hubbard street, near many downtown hotels), minimal cover, and jazz or blues EVERY night.   Kingston Mines is a true legend -- The oldest continuously operating blues club in Chicago, and a venue where EVERYONE has played.  I've seen Rik Ocasic, Ginger Baker and Mick Jagger jamming there after hours (NO, not at the same time, silly).   Is leaving these places out a conspiracy against the North Side, forgetfulness, or just ignorance?

SECOND, they are Quaker Parrots, not parakeets (ok, I'm getting pedantic).  Otherwise, DomKen has the right sensibilities.  How could I not mention Lincoln Park Zoo.  Its Free, its open EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR but Christmas day (zoos in winter can be a ball!) and it houses significant research facilities as well as animals.

Not to slight the Brookfield Zoo, which is about 14 miles due west of the Loop, and worth a trip.  Consider a west suburbs visit (my turf) that includes the zoo, Frank Lloyd Wright territory, the Car Kabob, and some of the great mob sites (SOON TO BE ADDED...the house in Bensenville where the Spilatro brothers were murdered -- anyone seen "Casino"?)

THIRD...where is the "North Hampton" area?  I've never heard of it, but heck....maybe I missed it.  I think whoever posted that is making it up.  The Alley is on Belmont Avenue, near Clark.  Just outside of "Boystown", but there's no North Hampton I've ever heard of.

and Finally....about baseball in Chicago (stand back, folks, this could get UGLY).  I've been a resident of this lovely city or its environs for 34 years (Since I've been 17 I've lived in Chicago, or a suburb touching the city)  And I was mostly a north sider.  About 10 years ago my brother moved here...and because he was a big time business guy..he got tickets to this odd, little known place on the South side called "Comiskey Park" (NOTE:  there is NO 'N' in the word.  Only rubes and people from Highland Park say "ComiNskey")  And I went....forsaking all I believed to see baseball played in this odd place....no vines.   No drunken announcer bellowing during the 7th inning stretch....no frat boys....few BMWs paying $50 for "easy out" parking (which means once I get your money, its EASY for me to GET THE HELL OUT before you figure out you are blocked in for the night).  and.....and this was amazing...NO LOSERS (on the field...PLENTY of losers in the stands...but I digress.)

If you love the history of the game, and the feel of the old ballpark, nothing beats Wrigley Field on a lovely summer day...but if you like to see winning baseball...you go south.  Here endeth the lesson!

Having read all the posts before responding (and not really knowing where most of y’all are from, I have to add bandit (just cuz), NOMC (cuz she knows what tapas is) and aileen (cuz she has a good eye), several of da museums and even more RESTAURANTS.

I was there some years ago, and while I am not a smoker…a cigar bar is sooooooo HAWT once every coupla years, huh?  Got a good Macanudo?

I’m hesitant to admit I’d like to see the Zoo, too…and anything by FLR has got to be awesome.  Did someone say architecture…hell, I loved his furniture!

Nobody mentioned the Botanic Gardens………almost 400 acres!!!  Nice place to cop a feel, huh?  I mean...plan a picnic.  Yeah... plan a picnic.

I always liked you.  Yes, seeing bandit would be a very good idea.  THEN we could go see Emperor.  Botanic Gardens are wonderful, but how about Ravinia under the Stars with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra?

I'll start saving pennies... (but first I gotta see some desert dweller I know.  It'll be awhile, I'm afraid.)

You're right the new Checkerboard isn't all that much like the old one but it still has top notch blues musicians on a regular basis.

Somebody did mention Kingston Mines. I usually go to the Green Mill so I didn't bother mentioning it.

Time for a battle of the pedants. Quaker Parrots are also known as Monk Parakeets.

See more rumors but how can it be baseball? Quoting from the MLB baseball rules:
"Baseball is a game between two teams of nine players each" but these southside "baseball" rumors involve teams of 10 players each. ;)

when i was driving the semi, i was known as "wrong-way linea" & "queen of the u-turns"...i was traveling through Chicagoland one day & my route took me through Joliet...i'm happily driving down the highway through town, enjoying looking at things i'd never seen before, when i noticed the dreaded "Low Clearance" sign...i was in the right lane, so i made a right, not having a clue where i would end up...eventually, i found myself at the old Joliet Prison, got some great pics & managed to get through/around the town with no more problems...these kinds of experiences are why i never got upset about getting "lost"! after reading the posts here, particularly the ones by Emperor, i want to go back sometime when i'm not wearing a big truck & spend some time in & around Chicago...and to think i had a job offer that would have forced me to move there & i turned it down...*sigh*

Yeah for Buddy Guy. I was bereft. I did mention Kingston Mines. Although I didn't know anything about Andy's. Of course, in my own defense I haven't lived in IL since I was 21 (a good 20 years) so Andy's would have been open all of a year when I left there.

Personally I've always preferred Comiskey Park over Wrigley. Shhh! I know...blasphemy. But then I'm a Cardinal fan at heart. Sue Me.

PS. Thank you oh wise Emperor! Edited to add the blasphemous tiny little words above.
