i am no astrological expert (tarot is my forte, as another mentioned), but the sun, rising/ascendant, and moon signs were explained to me like this:
When someone asks your sign, it currently refers to your sun sign. Your sun sign is like the glasses you put on to view and live life. The traits of your sun sign affect every area, and are usually the most recognized traits of a person. (Though there are always exceptions to every rule.)
The rising sign is how you would like to appear to others. Some of the traits of your rising sign speak of how you conduct yourself, the rules by which you govern your motions and plans, etc.
The moon sign tells of how a person is "wired" emotionally, in their private lives, and indicate more about how we are in relationships. It indicates traits of our "secret self", so to speak.
A good friend of mine is an amazing reader, and teaches astrology. She hinted once at the idea of looking at people's moon signs to know how to best love them. i think the moon sign would tel how best to serve them.
i wrote a BDSM tarot meaning once (for an entire deck), and had fun using it. i know only a little about astrology, but have the books to make up for what i lack. i would love to see how accurate my ideas are about applying lifestyle aspects to moon signs.
