I love Amy Tan. =] She's a more contemporary author, but she really writes from a very personal perspective about how cultures clash and try and mesh together... her mother is Chinese, and they moved here when Amy was a little girl, so the great culture wars are something that hits home for her. She's also a very eloquent writer, but not so high and mighty (Like T.S. Eliot) that it turns you off.

The Joy Luck Club is her most famous book, but my favorite one is The Bonesetter's Daughter. I started reading it and couldn't stop. ^^; She's my favorite, y'all should check her out.

I couldn't agree more about Amy Tan!  There are just too many books...and so little time!

I love this thread...thank you all!

Another I love and forgot to mention is Barbara Kingsolver's  The Poisonwood_Bible (click here)  which she wrote in the most unusual fashion.  What a neat study in personality and relationship.

Kingsolver's other books (Bean Trees, Homeland, Animal_Dreams, Pigs_in_Heaven) were also a fun read!  For some reason, I was not so enamoured of Prodigal_Summer (and I missed Homeland)

"Seth Speaks" by Jane Roberts - Is about answers to some of life's greatest mysteries   ...    (I just discovered the "Seth" series this Summer, but apparently the series of books has been in print for several years).

I agree the books done by the pair (?) were great... and thought The Nature of Personal Reality (click here)  to be the best of the bunch, in my opinion.  They were all good though, and really made ya think...about all sorts of stuff!!

Most of the books are still in print (and available on Amazon, etc)...but all are readily available used, as well.  Worth the read, too!

In addition, I found Rober's own fiction to be absolutely delightful...especially the little Trilogy about Oversoul Seven (click here)  GREAT FUN!!!

I actually have a few here:
The Stand: Stephen King. Makes you wonder would you be on the side of good or the side of evil?
The Outsiders: S.E. Hinton: This is just a great book
Anything By Anne Rice, except the beauty series. the girl was like 14 when she went to sleep? sorry but that's borderlined pedophelia to me, and those books never should have been published.
Story Of O, I forget who wrote it but it is an amazing book.
The Bourne Identy, Supremacy, Ultimatem. Anything by Robert Ludlum AND John Grisham is badass.
