Worst internet service ever. System outages almost every day, long waits for tech service...you name it, they don't have it.

That's all. Just wanted to vent. Now I feel better. Thanks.

Bob

Maybe if you didn't live in a cave, in the wilderness...

Have you tried HughesNet? From everything i've heard, they make WildBlue look great by comparison.

Bob:
I have Wild Blue because the closest phone line is six miles away.  Before I had it I had to drive fifteen miles to the public library to access the net.  The library nazis would not allow me to be on cm or any other sexually oriented site.  I have had the service for 14 months now and have had minimal problems.  The only problem I have had was that they wanted me to call them on the phone to deal with a problem I was having.  I kept telling them that if I had a phone I would not be having the problem because I would be using a different service.[:D]
The speed is slower than DSL but way faster than dial up.  Although it is about five times more expensive than the cheapest dial up.
Given my situation I will stay with them until real DSL gets a wire to me....which will be about ten minutes after I get done ice skating in hell....that is how far from Dodge I live.
The other satellite services that I contacted were more expensive by about 20% and I could not get them to make an appointment to do the install.  Wild Blue gave me free install and came within five days of my order....although I did have to meet them about ten miles away and bring them in VFR.

thompson: My situation is similar. I live out in the boonies, though not in a cave as alleged by Katy. Dialup out here was really bad, due to the noisy phone lines. The phone company DSL service is slowly working its way out to the canyon...maybe another 3 months, but probably more like 6 months to a year. I agree it's better than nothing and better than dialup. I  no longer have to go to a coffeeshop in town to receive or send big work-related files. I got a good installation deal, too. Still, it leaves a lot to be desired. I will bail on them as soon as it's feasible.

What do you have against caves? A cave was good enough for my great great great great great great great great great great grandfather, and it's good enough for me, too, dammit.

lmao -  I just got back online after my 3rd or 4th out today ... yep, WildBlue!   But, hey,  I am happy to live where I can see the stars against a black velvet sky at night, listen to Whip
O'Wills as I fall asleep, watch hawks all morning, and run around naked outside anytime I want!  There are trade offs for everything.  But WildBlue does suck!!!

I lived off-grid myself, at the edge of the San Isabel Nat'l Forest...and used Starband (which was then associated with DISH, as WildBlue is now).  They work about the same...but Starband costs about 10x more for installation (go figure).  I brought it down off the mtn when I moved to town a couple years ago (and decided not to get a land line in addition to a cell-phone).

The thing about satellite internet is there is stuff that interferes; like sunbursts off the sun in the spring and fall…causes havoc with satellite connection!  So does cloud cover and heavy rain; either at YOUR site… OR at the hub site.  Sometimes snow on the antenna (dish) on my roof gets ice or snow that interferes, too.  Shit happens.   Once, a connector got water in it…when some outside wires got moved and the thing came a bit loose.

None of this stuff seems to me to be a ‘fault’ of the provider…it’s a part of a satellite system.  Chill…you ‘could’ be living shoulder to jowl with your neighbors and be sharing DSL (which has its own problems!!!)

BTW… dial up (Earthlink, AOL, etc…costs about $15-25/mo PLUS the cost of a phone line, huh?)  All things considered (in that I’d want a dedicated line…) satellite is a bargain, in my book!

My installer also installs Hughsnet, which charges more for installation and is about the same speed as both Starband and Wildblue... but Wildblue has customer service beat hands down to BOTH the others!

Trade offs, shmade offs...bah, humbug! I want it all. The Milky Way, the shooting stars, the hawks, the hummingbirds, gila monsters, quail, and vinegaroons...and fast internet, too!!

Oh yeah...and the running around naked thing, too. I'd hate to have to give that up.
