For me, even local... it could take months.

Go with your gut - it's hard to compare the length of time with the quality of time, the way it was spent and things talked about.  When the Dominant suggest it and you feel it's right.  If you don't, say so.  If He moves on, he wasn't for you.

3 to 6 months given excessive distance.

How long you'd have to 'know' someone online?  Normally (for a 30 mile radius) I would have to exchange a lot of email first, then a few phone calls to get an idea of who that person was prior to meeting. The amount of time I spend speaking to locals using email before meeting for the first time is usually short (typically a few days to about a week).

If the person is quite far away then I'd have to rely more on email and phone conversations and therefore spend a longer time chit-chatting through email.   If possible I'd opt for short visits despite the long distance since the first meeting is quite important if you ask me.

trustingsub, If simply friends

how long is really dependent on what the potencial relationship is bound for.

If simply friends, it can be a relatively short period of time. But if there is a view toward a D/s relationship then my program dictates a long time in the dance to make sure both parties understand the needs of the other.

MJ an I have known eachother over 3 1/2 years before we finally met [long story]; before that with other men, it was at LEAST 6 or 7 phone calls, emails and IM conversations. I won't meet someone 'blind' in other words without knowing enough about them to know that compatability is there and that IF we played that I would be 'ok.' I'm cautious, it pays off though, better to be a bit cautious that to make the front page of the paper.

With my ex, we interacted and got to know each other for about 3
months, before we decided we would get together in person(this would be differnet for me for someone local).

That was the right time for us, it might be differnet with someone else. I think it depends a lot on the individuals and how everything progresses.

Define 'quite far away'?  Most people I've met over the years I met the first day.  (That would be 'the same day communications begun'.)

The relationship I'm in now, we're separated by 700 miles.  We met basically the 2nd weekend we had started talking (11 days).  The wait was interminable.

in this day and age it really does not matter.. people can wig out anytime in their life and become a Axe murder lol so... i guess the point of it being dose not matter when you meet just grow with them get to know them and for crying out loud keep your freaking Friends neighbors and the people next door out of it oh yeah and  your little dog too.. and the relationship will go as it was meant to:)
