I just read the coolest quote from Bill Russell. For those of you who might not know him, Russell's Boston Celtics won 11 championships in 13 years. Pretty amazing stuff. He had this to say about teamwork: quote:
``I was part of a team, and I dedicated myself to making that team the best,'' he said. ``To me, one of the most beautiful things is to see a group of men coordinating their efforts toward a common goal, alternately subordinating and asserting themselves to achive real teamwork in action. I found it beautiful to watch.'' I love that, and I am familiar with that dynamic of alternately subordaniting and asserting within a team (or unit in the Corps). I love the Patrick O'Brian Aubrey/Maturin books so much that one summer I signed on as a crewmember on a tall ship. I remember pulling into port, and being stunned at the emotional response of several of the other voyage (temporary) crew, espcecially the older guys - they acted as if they were losing lifelong friends. I realized it was their first, ever, taste of teamwork or unit cohesion. Sad to think that a person might not ever taste that until they were in their 50s, but late is better than never.
