Ugh, don't you just love em? Mine have been terrible lately. Damn pollen. I took some Sudafed, and I have noticed that it does it's job... but only so well. Like if you've got congestion, it clears your sinuses, but then you have a runny nose to deal with. Or if you've got a runny nose, it makes it congested. AND it keeps you up at night (even the "night time" stuff). Has anyone else noticed this? Or know of any great alternatives? Oh, and anything that would really help with a sore throat would be good too. Thanks, ~fp

Well I don't know if sore throat sick treatments work same as sore throat alergies. But hot water tho it tastes awfull to me plain is one of the best treatments. The lemon theraputic drinks, tastes awfull again to me but it works. Apple cidar heated, Hot drinks teas soothing things

I have chronic nasal allergies to the point where my sense of smell is almost nonexistent. My prescription stuff (Clarinex) works most of the time, but it's not cheap, even with insurance. There are a lot of sites, like webmd, that list ways to prevent pollen allergy trouble, but it's 5:36 AM and I'm too damn lazy to look them up at the moment.

Hubby and i both have found that the Kirkland (Costco) brand of allergy medicine works miracles.

My suggestion is to see an allergist. That's really the only way to treat your condition. Over-the-counter stuff just makes you tired, and usually doesn't work very well anyway. Also, allergies can lead to other problems, especially asthma. So I wouldn't fool around.

Thanks, ~fp I take over the counter generic Loratadine which is the same ingredient in Claritin (sp?) for about half of the price. You can get 60 tablets for about $20-25. It works for me and I used to have horrible problems even when I did go to an allergist. If you haven't done so, go get tested and perhaps start injection therapy. That works also. Also, a mixture of honey, lemon juice and whiskey can help a sore throat and will help you sleep. In my drinking days I would simplify it and not use the honey and lemon. You can't feel a sore throat if you are passed out.[8D]

I've taken Claritin (which works okay) and Zyrtec, which is the only thing that controls the hives. You can get both of those drugs OTC in Canada, the Zyrtec is called Reactine there. Luckily I have a friend up there who sends it to me whenever I need it. I also carry an Epi-Pen if I know I can't get to the ER quickly. The allergist did give me Allegra, which has also helped alot. That stuff ain't cheap though. That is also OTC in Canada, and my "supplier" has told me all I need to do is whistle if I need any more. Lately everything has been under control, without any drugs, and I still don't know what it is I am allergic to. I'm sure stress has something to do with it, and my body adapts to that too. I'm due for another outbreak pretty soon, but I'm all stocked up at the moment!

I also would like to caution you regarding long term use of over the counter allergy medication. Some types of allergy remedies can seriously increase the pressure inside of your eye and cause glaucoma which can lead to blindness. Please see your physician regularly if you choose to take OTC allergy medications for long periods. It is also a very good idea to see an opthalmologist to be tested for glaucoma.. it is not just an older persons disease.

Since glaucoma does run in my family I am due for a visual field sometime soon. I have not taken any medication for over a month now and am doing just fine. One of the reasons I don't want to go back to the allergist is because I wanted to find out what was causing my reactions, not to just mask them by taking meds, which is what he wanted me to do. Hopefully I won't be having any more outbreaks, but if I do I at least have something to prevent me from 1. becoming a scratched up bloody mess and 2. having to make another trip to the ER. The only thing that works for me is Tylenol Allergy Sinus...takes care of the headaches and the stuffiness and all the other alllergy symptoms....and its awesome for hangovers too(lol)

It has been awful here in Chicago, mid 90's and no rain for day's. We have a Pollution Alert for the "Windy City" there has been hardly any wind at all except at the Lake Front. I usually drink Eucyluptus, Echinecea & Golden Seal teas. I can not tolerate decongestants or stimulants of any kind. The tea's are especially soothing on the thoat. *Brightspot

These are great, I totally forgot about echinecea and tylenol allergy sinus. However things are not looking to good. I do have allergies, that's for sure, but now the runny nose and sneezing has turned into a fever. It was not a happy day. [:@] I ended up having to sit in the freezing science building for 2 hours to take a physics midterm (that I couldn't skip), all the while sniffling and sneezing and attempting to discretely wipe snot off my nose (and you just know that everyone was grossed out who sat around me) AND calculate the distance traveled by an object launched at 30 degrees with an initial velocity of 2 km/h! I'm sure I failed lol. Anyway, a thought crossed my mind... a fever is the body's way of fighting a disease. So is it better to let the fever run it's course, or take tylenol or something to reduce it? (and it's not that high... 99.8 right now) What do you guys think?

Be careful with echinacea. It probably won't help your cold, and it could make your allergies worse.

A low grade fever is fine for a couple days, yes it is fighting and helping your body. But if it continues or starts to rise to like 102 seek medical attention. Hope you feel better soon! *Brightspot

My Dom has chronic allergy problems. To the point the pain is always apparent no matter what time of the year it is. He has had a full battery of allergy tests time and time again. The only thing they have come up with he is allergic to is dust spores. It is at its worst at work when the air conditioner is running. He is a computer geek so he is always in an air conditioned environment year round. Essentially prescription or non..nothing really works. The best meds we have found are a sinus tablet at the health food store. It is sublingual. You can take as many as you want a day...helps him a bit. It seems people with chronic problems..what may work for a period of time becomes crap after a while. Just depends on if you want to be drugged up the rest of your life. No doubt that is why everyone in this thread quoted something different. Some meds just stopped working and they've moved onto other's. Good luck...and I hope your allergies get a little better.

Ordinarily air conditioning IMPROVES allergy symptoms, so my thought is that either there is something wrong with the air-conditioning system at work, or he's reacting to something at work that has nothing to do with the air conditioning. quote: ORIGINAL: sub4hire It is at its worst at work when the air conditioner is running.
