For the last four summers, I volunteered to work for the Cronicle, under the thirty-day summer intern program. I originally volunteered because it looks good on college applications. It's a lot of fun, and I've done it every summer since.
When still in High School, you get to do highly challenging jobs like bundling and archiving, but the last two summers I've been fortunate enough to qualify as a skilled intern, and got some fun assignments. Last summer, I assisted an at-large reporter as part of his crew. It was a blast, and I met a ton of fascinating people.
So in June I applied, for the month of August. Two weeks ago, I got a letter telling me that I was not selected, with no reason given. I was a little shocked. It's supposed to be awarded based on a formula of college major, experience, and GPA. I'm not a Journalism or English major, but have four years of experience, and while I'm not the smartest person you will find, I'm a bit of a academic bulldog, and have GPA to burn.
I let it go ... I just decided to spend the month kicking back. This morning I was talking to my friend Monica, who was accepted to the program, and she told me that all ninty-two interns in the orientation, were Hispanic ... literally every single one. This blew me away, because the last few years, it was pretty much equally distributed between Hispanics, African-Americans and Caucasians, with a smattering of Orientals, etc ...
Now, for me this is just a summer bummer, but I was thinking, what about the actual Journalism students. UofH Clear Lake has a predominantly African-American student body, and has a very strong Journalism department, especially print production. I can't believe that not a single student from that school was selected. I mean, for them, this actually messes with their major.
OK ... this was a vent. I feel better now. Sorry for unloading.

So you are saying that discrimination makes you feel bad. You are saying that you are not only qualified but you have experience in this particular job. Some one else has been given "your job" because of their ethnicity. Ain't that just a fuckin' cryin' shame. Try it for a hundred years or so. If you don't like if after one job loss try it for a few generations. Try it for ten or twenty generations. Once you get a real case of the ass for discrimination come on back and give us a rant about how much discrimination sux.
