Daisyblue Gray here from SL. I ADORE the game. I have not had many problems at all, actually. I use a laptop I got specifically for gaming though LOL. I love SL. It is a lovely escape. People have created such beauty there, and so many places and minds to explore. It is definately a good place to explore various sides of yourself, in a safe environment. :) Just be careful all..... try not to get too attached to online people, particularly in that game. You never know who they are.... or are not.

Try going to the SL website with this. I had that problem for a few patches and I followed their instructions to turn off my audio before the game launched. I missed the sound but I was able to play. The subsequent patches have fixed it and I have sound again. They are pretty good at helping people troubleshoot on the site, though. Just a thought...

Yeah the controls are a little wonky in the beginning but you'll get there soon. You can use the W A S D keys to move and the page up key to fly/jump so it is a little bit more intuitive. If you decide you like it and want to stay look into getting an animation over rider which will play a different animation for you to walk/run etc making things a lot smoother. The good ones are not free but there are some free ones if you go to NCI ie new citizens incorporated. There you can get some newbie skins/shapes/ao's so you don't look so...newbie =).  I also have a really nice fem shape I made some time ago that I wouldn't mind giving out for free to anyone here who needs it.
And most importantly in Second Life...have fun!

I am pretty sure they recently worked out their issues with Vista, you should be good to go.

Having read this thread, looked at the site and followed a link to 'how to' it seems to be extremely complicated, is it my non technical brain or did I miss something?? Another question, how do people find the time to go to this world? especially with work and family commitments? I ask because it seems something I am interested in, but fear that with my skills I would end up naked in the desert with a group of chest thumping born agains.....or worse, naked, lost and on my own in the desert!

I am unsure how to answer because I do not know the extent of your computer science knowledge. To install the game you follow the links to make a new account then download the client and in less that twenty minutes you should be in world.
Getting around and learning is just like any other hobby I would say. If tomorrow I wanted to take up race car driving I would simply slot my free time as learning time and allocate said time to learning the ins outs and hows of race car driving. Say instead of three hours of TV I do two and one hour of second life. As far as being lost etc, there is always the search button, search for a place and teleport to it. I would reccomend NCI which is new citizens incorporated. They are a pg place that has lots of freebies and classes for those new to second life.
If you need help further please send me a private message in game or on here and I would be happy to assist as much as I can.

This is going to sound like a stupid question, but...

If you say that The Free Dove sells free items, you're implying that there are places selling items that aren't free.

If they aren't free, where does the money come from?  Do you have to pay real money?

And if so, what's the point?

This will take you to The Free Dove, which is a place to get free clothes, a couple of free hairstyles. (Once there, "stand still" for a few minutes for things to rez (load) before walking around.) To get the items, when you see a box you like, right click on it. There will be a pie menu and one of the slices says buy. Click it. Before you click the buy button on the window that comes up, read the amount of money they want you to buy it for.. it should say Buy for 0 Lindens from xyz. Everything in Free Dove is free, but you should get used to reading the money amount before you click buy. Some places will say free when you hover over something and then have a charge on the window that comes up. Free Dove does not ever do that. It is a safe and reputable place. Once you click buy, the item will be downloaded to your inventory. (Some items will offer to download to your inventory just by touching them. If that happens, just press yes and you don't have to go through the buy menu.) You find it by clicking the Inventory button in the lower right corner of your screen. Find the items name. Many of the items can be worn by right clicking the item and selecting "wear." Other items are in "boxes." Those you have to drag from your inventory and drop it on the floor. Right click on the box and select open from the right side of the pie menu. You can either copy to inventory or copy and wear.. your choice. After you open the box, right click on it and select take. This puts it back in your inventory. It is considered polite to clean up after yourself and not doing so can get you banned from an area. After you're done with Free Dove, copy http://slurl.com/secondlife/Vlaanderen/125/122/34 into your chat box and press enter, then click it to teleport to Vlaanderen Freebie Shop and get the free stuff there. That's a good start and you should find something you like at one of the two places. Then you can start to explore.

Hi LaM,

"Selling" isn't a transfer of money in SL; it represents a command.  You can 'buy' something for 0 Lindens (Lindens are the money unit.  4 dollars buys you 1000 Lindens or so.)

Well then it IS a transfer of money if you buy something that costs Lindens.

So my question is: Why do people pay real money for virtual items in Second Life?  I don't get it.

2. My lap top just does not have what it takes .... lag is shocking

Tips for killing the lag monster

1.  Most Important! Turn your draw distance down between 64 -90, go to: edit - preferences - graphics
The lower the setting the faster it is.  Imagine your computer having to draw an entire sim at one time, ouch, thats a heavy strain.

2. Go to: edit - preferences - graphics detail. There are four sliders at the bottom. Slide them all to the far left. The world won't be quite as pretty, but your machine will thank you. Also on this tab, set lights to sun and moon only, make sure Avatar rendering is set at normal and uncheck everything under shaders.

3. Reduce your bandwidth to 500 or less go to: edit - preferences - network.
This setting is super important because it effects everyone around you as well as yourself.  If you ever walk by someone and lag out, its probably because their bandwidth is too high.

4. Go to: edit - preferences - ADV Graphics. Second from the bottom is "Outfit Composite Limit." Make sure your outfit composite is not over 2 and you can set it as low as 0

I use Vista for SL and have no problems at all. (Although the 'first look' voice viewer is a little flakey for me right now.)

People pay money to play all sorts of online games. You -can- visit SL for free, but it quickly becomes annoying not to have a nice looking AV, a place to live, money for nicer clothes etc. I bought an annual membership for $72 - $6/month. Considering that I go to SL almost every day of the week, that is *very* cheap entertainment, IMO.

Because I joined last year, I get a weekly stipend from them of $400L (I think that has been reduced lately to $300L/week). That works out to almost $2/week, so in effect they are paying me to go there. Between Oct. 2006 when I joined, and about 2 weeks ago the only money I spent was my stipend and what I won playing Slingo. About 2 weeks ago I decided I wanted more Lindens and paid about $20US for about 5000 Lindens. Now I'm pretty much set for (second) life. ;)

M sub bought a brand new PC last weekend with Vista and he can't play SL on it because of his graphics card so it says. So for now he is using his old PC just for SL. I am planning to get Vista in a few weeks, I hope I dont have any problems. We have been having great fun in SL, we went to a dungeon party last night that was really cool.
