I have people I know who have taken in Ferral (wild, no human contact) and most of them even turn around but it takes time. It also has happened when I have brought a new kitten home too, although their coming out process dosen't take as long as a ferral.

My mom took in a ferral kitten and it hide under the bathtub for two weeks. We just put her food, water and cat box close to the tub and left her alone. This way she was under there but secretly watched everyone in the house. Under the tub was cool because when people were in there doing whatever business she was able to watch them close up and get a feeling for their trustworthiness.

After two weeks she slowly began to venture out and test things. Before long she was intermingling and beginning to let people pet her and trust was slowly built, she became and is a very loveable outgoing cat now.

My suggestion would be to bascially tend to her needs; food, water and catbox and leave her a lone, but whenever in her presence talk kindly to her but don't look at her.
I am almost certain she will come around, it might take time, sometimes a lot of time but she will come around as soon as she has figured out the place, people and other animals aren't out to Get Her. That really right now is her biggest fear.

Good-Luck Popeye, hope it works out, just be as paitient as you can[;)].

Missy.

Missy, I think that's pretty good advice.
He's under the dresser in my bedroom now so I put some kernals of Iams kitten food in front of it about two hours ago and now it's gone.
I did catch him two days ago and wanted to pat him but he got away from me.
He will come out to the living room and eat but then he goes right back into my bedroom and under the bed or dresser.
So, I think patience is the way to go for a week or two.

Awwwwwwwwww, isn't he cute!
He's out in the livingroom eating now!
When he drops a kernal of food out of his dish onto the floor he goes after it and eats it.
Bubba spills food on the floor and it stays there until I pick it up.
He's light brown on his back and sides and head and white on his little legs, belly, chest and face.
Is that a "Callico" cat?

Calicoes are orange (red) and primarily female ( males are rare and usually sterile).  Sounds like you have a bi-color. :)

He's out and about again!
I let him see me patting Bubba.
Bubba is a big Tabby cat. He weighs about 15 pounds.
I was just wondering what the kitten is.

Sounds like this little guy got a great place to
become his new home!
He will figure that out soon enough[;)].

This reminds me of an old Dennis the Menace cartoon.  Dennis is holding a kitten upbove his head and looking up.  Margaret asks what he's doing.  He says "I don't know if my kitten is a boy or a girl.  My Mom holds them up like this and looks at the bottom of their feet".

Popeye, if you lift the tail you will see either a : (colon), indicating female or an upside down exclamation point, indicating a male.  At 3 months of age the testicles whould have dropped by now.

popeye

So happy to hear you are a great, concerned kitty pet!  (And don't let them fool you - kitty pets know who owns who!)

I've worked for a vet and done alot of work with feral cats.  You're doing the right thing by using patience.  trust is very hard for kittens that aren't socialized and it takes them a while to build it up.  One of the best ways you can engender some loving trust is to get a few dangly, stringy kitty toy types (like the kitty fishing toys)  No kitten can resist a string and if you show kitten that you are willing to play (resist the urge to pet kitty until he comes to you)  you can build up the trust faster.  It usually can take up to a month to build up the trust but if you are patient and persistant you will be surprised one morning to wake up with kitty curled up on your feet.

Good luck, and remember Dogs come when their called, Cats take a message and get back to you

I applaud you in taking in this cat....I am an animal lover and due to later in life allergies and time constraints it has made it all but impossible to remain healthy and give the required commitment that an animal deserves.

Good luck to you and your new kitten...However, you are now at your limit...Three cats and beyond and you will become the creepy "cat guy" down the block.

popeye1250 -> RE: New Kitten Problem. (7/26/2007 10:14:37 AM)

Last night I went into the master bathroom and turned on the light and the kitten was in the sink!
I think we both startled each other and he bolted and went under the bed again. Man, is that cat Fast!

nyrisa -> RE: New Kitten Problem. (7/26/2007 11:02:27 AM)

Ack; that brings up another thought. Be sure you leave the toilet lid down at all times (errr, when not in use!). He is at the curious, exploring stage, and sometimes small pets drown in the toilet.

Nyrisa, I already thought of that but he can jump up on the sink which is 3 feet high so I don't think he'd have any problem getting out of the toilet.
This will be like training for me too; "What? Put the toilet seat down?" "Why?"

nyrisa -> RE: New Kitten Problem. (7/26/2007 6:46:44 PM)

I once had a female cat, a lovely Himalayan. She and my husband never really hit it off, as she considered him to be crude and he considered her to be snobby and standoffish. Her favorite spot to lounge was on the bathroom window sill. She could only reach it by jumping onto the toilet seat, then up to the sill. Jumping back down the same way was complicated by the fact that she could not SEE the toilet because of the window curtains. One day, she leaped down, and he had left the toilet seat up, and this elegant, fastidious cat plunged into the toilet with a huge splash.

My husband was dying laughing as she raced past, all soaking wet and looking like an anorexic rat, with all her fluffy hair soaked and flat. She paused, and gave him a look that would have killed, before running to hide under the sofa. She did not know how, but she KNEW he was to blame, and she never forgave him for it. Needless to say, trying to get him to put the toilet seat down after that was useless, because he was hoping to see a repeat performance.

Alumbrado -> RE: New Kitten Problem. (7/27/2007 8:44:18 AM)

Speaking of which, I highly recommend that folks get their kitten(s) toilet trained as soon as practicicable. A little extra work at first, a (kitty) lifetime of freedom from poop scooping.

Pussy does not take to excess hair, I think you need to trim down and everything will work out. [;)][;)]

Joseff -> RE: New Kitten Problem. (7/27/2007 9:01:17 PM)

Go get the kitten, hold him in your lap and pet him. Don't let hm down, he'll go to sleep there eventually. Eventually he'll get used to that, and associate it with being safe and warm.

When I need to lure my cats out of hiding, I put some catnip in my palm, then crush a bit between my fingers. Works like the Accio charm. Not sure, though, if kittens should have catnip.

Vendaval -> RE: New Kitten Problem. (7/27/2007 9:46:32 PM)

Aww...that is too cute!  About the falling in the toilet part, as little as s/he is, getting out would be a problem because the procelain is all slippery and there is nothing to grip onto.

As for coaxing kitty out to play, do get down on the floor and pull a string around and also consider one of those laser pointers.  Cats will chase the lights from those for hours.

Have you thought of a name for kitty yet?  [:D]

How do I get him to stay out more?
I've tried moving his food and water dish further out but that doesn't seem to work.
Any experts on cats here?

Just give him some time. Some cats are just really shy and it takes a long time before they get to trust you. I've raised two litters of kittens and they are generally more explorative when everything is still.  Try sitting down and reading a book for an hour or two, see if the kitten comes out. You might also want to try putting a catnip treat out.

popeye1250 -> RE: New Kitten Problem. (7/27/2007 10:12:12 PM)

Aquatic, yeah, that seems to be working.
He was out a lot more tonight and wandered further.
He also polished off the rest of Bubba's canned treat catfood that I give him once in a while.
I sit here at the computer fairly still but I do move a bit and he does know that I'm here. If he's close and I move he bolts for the bedroom.
Vendaval, the lady I got the kitten from called him "Bear."
I was thinking ...maybe........"Butthead?"

AquaticSub -> RE: New Kitten Problem. (7/27/2007 10:25:06 PM)

You might want to try taking a nap in the room he is in. Whenever I've got a litter I love to take naps in the room they are being kept in. I generally wake up covered in kittens taking their own naps! It's probably because of the warmth but it's a lot of fun and they seem to trust you more when they nap on you.
