The state’s attorney general has vowed to help safeguard the Internet from cyber perverts after Myspace.com revealed yesterday that more than 29,000 sex offenders have profiles on the wildly popular service.
Martha Coakley’s office would not disclose how many of the offenders were from Massachusetts, but said it was working with other attorneys general to make the popular social networking site safer.
“We have been working with Attorney General Roy Cooper of North Carolina and Attorney General Richard Blumenthal of Conncecticut on this very important issue in an effort to make Myspace safer,” said Melissa Sherman, a spokeswoman for Coakley’s office.

29,000?  On MySpace?!  Wow.  They must've only searched one city- or a particularly large ZIP code

Edit:  Fair warning that this subject will boarder dangerously close on the TOS, as MySpace is largely a site that catters to, and serves, minors.  While it maintains quite healthy other populations, these populations are the minorities- and not the ones sexual predators are likely after.

To comment, if this thread isn't whiped-  I had a MySpace.  Minor girls kept adding me, constantly, without even bothering to say 'Hello' first.  Friend invites spammed my inbox on Hotmail, so I did away with it pretty quickly.  Since, I've found a couple of decent music links on it, as the site was orginially intended for.  Still, I try to avoid it, as it really is a site for the kids.  (While, again, yes, it does have an adult population; I'm aware.)

I get 15 friend requests every time I log on.  I simply respond with an email saying "hello" or something innocuous.  If they dont respond intelligently after 2 weeks, I deny the request.

I deny any requests.  I only use the profile to spy on my babysitter and make sure she's  not fucking in my bed.

I look at her profile and read what she writes back and forth with her girlfriends.

i believe it was two cities:

"The new figures were first released by officials in two states - North Carolina and Connecticut - which have been pressing MySpace to reveal data about sex offenders found to be using the site.

"The exploding epidemic of sex offender profiles on MySpace - 29,000 and counting - screams for action," said Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal.

In North Carolina, Attorney General Roy Cooper wants a state law that would require children to obtain parental permission before creating profiles on sites such as MySpace, and require the site to check parents' identity.

He said such a law would mean "fewer children at risk, because there will be fewer children on those web sites".

Under current rules, users must be over the age of 14 to register with MySpace."

the problem is that kids lie and say they are 14 or over.
one way around the problem of unwanteds is to have the kids make their page private and not allow anyone as their "friend" that they don't know.

Ahhhhhh, sneaky!

I went into the sex offender site for S. Carolina and the one thing that 98% of those guys have in common is that they're incredably ugly!
I mean we're talking "you're mother's so ugly they put her in the zoo to keep the monkeys from jerking off" ugly.

Only 29,000 perverts on MySpace ?  That number seems a little low to me.

And, there's this stat also for MySpace: 75,000 Nigerian scammers. And that stat doesn't include all the Russian's! *snicker

Oops, I forgot the liars, and players. (smile)

It would be very satisfying to see MySpace cleaned up and safe from predators. We can dream, right?
