Noticed this - just thought it interesting, seeing as the commandments on walls was mentioned in a previous thread ... US bans Commandments in courtroom Peace and Love

I read that earlier..... they did leave enough room in the law to allow the Ten commandments to stay on their walls however. Jewel

In a way this is old news with a new twist. Justice Moore in Alabama made headlines when he refused to take the monument out of his Montgomery Court house. This new twist is just a spin off and was guaranteed to happen. It is too bad, but that is what happens I guess.

This pleases me. Though I do wish they'd supported the ban for -every- public place. Ah well, it will come.

I am very glad and interested to see that the Supreme Court passed a mixed opinion. I am all for removing the Ten Commandments from places where they would be perceived as intrusive to other religions. I am also in agreement with Justice Ginsberg's statement about how removing the Ten Commandments from a secular law building helps them to retain their religious power and helps people avoid taking them out of context. It is interesting to see how this will play out. I agree with the justices' narrow ruling concerning the monument outside the Texas statehouse. I feel that there are many beautiful works of art that may (or may not) have religious themes to them that could be removed from existence. For instance, will we allow all statues or figures of angels to be taken down because not all people believe in angels, and some people may be offended by them? Or would we allow figures of Greek mythology to be taken off public places for the same reasons? I didn't understand what the justices meant by that until much later in the day. It is encouraging to see the justices obviously working through some difficult issues. I know that I am certainly fascinated by the judicial process and definitely respect the Supreme Court! it is definitely very difficult to make those decisions and also to make them with grace and class!

I dont understand where these ultra-religious people get off saying that the US legal system is based off the Ten Commandments. Only three commandments are translated into actual laws. Those being: Thou shalt not kill Thou shalt not steal Thou shalt not commit adultery Adultery isn't even a crime in half of the states of the United States and its not even enforced in half of the states that do have adultery laws. Then there is stealing and killing. I'm sorry, but Laws against these crimes are hardly original christian concepts. People were placing value upon and disregarding the lives and property of others LONG before their god was dreamt up.

Well, that depends on when you believe that God was 'invented' - opinions differ - [;)] As for a 'them and us' attitude, I find that quite offensive - sure there are different opinions, but just because you might not follow a certain religions, creed or code - doesn't mean you have to make yourself sound better by using a condecending attitude. But of course, I would say that, being 'one of them and their God', wouldn't I? But then, I would say the same on whatever religion, creed, code or conscience you were dismissing with distain. I agree with brightspot, personally - I think that politics should stay out of religion, and religion stay out of politics, although I may never see that in my Lifetime - I would prefere they work together to provide a safer world - but thats another thread altogether - I am not paticularly fond of having the Tens placed up on walls or plaques anyway - smells of cronic global advertising to me anyways.
