So this is the weekend that ComiCon arrives in San Diego.

A season or two ago there was an episode of the HBO series Entourage that touched on the existence of a supposed D/s cultural element at this event.

Does anyone know if there's any truth to that, or was it just intriguing TV drama?

Oy, don't even get me started. Comic-con started yesterday. We have American Idol try outs, horse races at Del Mar, a youth soccer tournament and the Acura Tennis tournament. It's going to be a very full weekend here.

I can't speak in absolutes, but I will say that Comic-con has a great deal of fetishism to it. Girls dressed up Harajuku style, lots of swords, lots of corsets, a lot of goth. I think it shares some symbolism with the D/s BDSM world, but in a lot of cases it's vanilla with a little fantasy mixed in. Just like the Renn Faires. Some part of the group is in the lifestyle, the rest are just playing roles and enjoying the imagery.

all geekdom intertwines in some way shape or form....I'm convinced. Comicon, Ren Faires, Gencon, MTG players, RPGers, etc....while all aren't everything...I do believe we over lap a whole heck of a lot.

Oside Girl-- Isn't that part of what makes this place so great?  There's always so much to choose from.  (Of course, it makes traffic and parking pretty unbearable, but there's a price to everything).

My fave cartoonist, who draws Dieselsweeties, is there. If anyone has not read his stuff (it's predominantly an online strip) it's very kinky - furries, cos play, human/robot relationships, etc. So I'd say, yes there likely are more than a few kinky types there. He can't be the only one.

Keep in mind, comics have a long history of bondage art; there are several sites dedicated to covers with all sorts of kinky going ons, dating back to the 40s, I believe.

If the influx of emails in my inbox from people here to attend ComiCon can be considered an indication I would have to say "yes".

Don't you just love living in SD?

Osidegirl. Most definitely a full weekend here in North County.

I was at ComiCon on Friday and what a great time it was. Some fantastic art work, some great costumes and just a shit load of people. I heard somewhere that there were 140,000 people attending this year for the first time everyday of the event was sold out.

There is a fetishist element there but it's not over the top. For instance I've never seen Dom(mes) leading slaves around on a leash, public displays of submission or anything like that. Sure, there's oodles of cleavage formed from those NASA designed bras that takes a girls boobs and turn them into incredible fleshy shelves that jump out at you as if to say "Hi, I'm a boob, nice to meet you", uber short skirts and shorts and some patent leather/latex. The girls at the Suicide Girls booth were probably the most provocatively dressed in the place and the girls that expose the most flesh are the ones in the Princess Leah metal bikinis.   Due to the obvious absence of many adult oriented art and comics, I’m sure that somewhere there must be an adult’s only area where there might be more going on, but I’ve never looked for it.   I think OsideGirl is right in saying that it’s vanilla with a little fantasy thrown in. Most of these people are into the sexy fashion element and not what the fashion element represents.
