I think you can usually tell when it's a typo. In that case, it's fine. Poorly written emails don't bother me so much as tell me something about the person when typos are obvious and frequent. I'm also not a big fan of abbreviated typing...it's OK for taking notes in school but how much pressure is someone under composing a message on this board? anthrosub

I have to admit that bad spelling and grammar bothers Me alot. I prefer to be with people who are well-spoken and show pride by taking the time to write a nice letter. I am not looking for a doctoral thesis, but it does bother Me when I get the one or two liners, all run together, with no punctuation and obvious misspellings (not just a little typo or two). And I am particularly senitive to those who think it is acceptable to use lazy chatspeak. Maybe it's not fair, but it is the first impression I get of someone. I am who I am, and I want what I want.

In my humble opinion, with the software available on the market today, anyone who is too damned lazy to click on a button and get the computer to correct spelling errors just raises a question mark in my mind. I may not be the strongest linguist to ever grace these pages but I do care about how I present myself, therefore, I spell check. It doesn't catch everything because you can use the wrong word and it will be spelled correctly and unless you proofread your writing, you won't catch it. In this day and age where kids graduate from high school not being able to read or write, poor spelling isn't a shock. I try not to judge by spelling or grammar but rather by content.

Spelling and correct grammar mean a whole lot to me. Its hard to dechiper what people mean if they can't do it right. perfection

I like to see someone has made an effort but I'd be more particular on manners than on spelling..... someone with dyslexia doesnt always find a spell check to be of any use. I'd rather see a "please" written where appropriate even if its not typed perfectly. Oumae

I would agree about the typos... hell just read some of the things I've written after I go get my nails done after not having them for a while...LOL What I hate is someone who obviously doesn't care enough to make a decent first impression (the whole email full of screw ups...LOL). And the whole "chat speak" will be the first thing to get me to go completely off on the person. I mean, if I'm not worth the time it takes to actually spell out a damn 3 letter word then why in the world are they writing to me in the first place? U? R? 2? Give it a rest, I'm not in the 6th grade text messaging my little frirends. Another thing that bothers me is the "slashy" typing. Y/you and things like that. One, when you have an entire post that is written that way it gives me a headache... And something I know a lot of people aren't aware of, I have several friends that use the reader programs on their computers due to sight problems or blindness. And it's almost impossible to follow along with. Example: W/we really would like Y/you to come to O/our home this weekend if Y/you have no other plans. Now, say this outloud: Double you forward slash we really would like why forward slash you to come to oh forward slash our home this weekend if why forward slash you have no other plans period Can you imagine listening to that, in that mechanical computer voice for an entire length of a post? Could you keep up with it? I know I wouldn't want to. I think we miss out on alot of very thoughtful/insiteful posts from some pretty interesting people because of it and that is a shame.

http://www.spellcheck.net/ ~~> Free. Easy. Incorrect use of punctuation, lack of punctuation and incorrect spelling drive me up a wall. If a person cannot be bothered to articulate well I don't feel the need to bother with a reply. Why should their time be worth more than mine? And if that's not what they're trying to convey by typing: "Ur so hawt. Kan I sexxors U???!?" then I suppose they ought to be working on their presentation skills.

Just because a person cannot spell does not mean they don't have something intelligent to share. Granted when it is real bad it is harder to read. Although what if you dismissed someone based solely on spelling and they were the perfect person in all other avenues to you? Live alone the rest of your life?

MaggieLynn, thank you so much for bringing this to My, and perhaps others' attention! The capitalization of Me and My, We, Our, etc. are probably no big deal, but the slashing, which is sometimes second nature to Me, could be a problem for anyone using this type of computer program. And I honestly never thought about it. On a personal level, I will try to not do the slashy thing anymore. That will probably cause Me more edits, but what the hell! I already edit everything!

I won't ignore someone for the occasional spelling error provided there's an obvious effort being made by them to type well. Capitalization, punctuation, spelling, grammar... they are important to me. Someone who spells poorly and won't use a spellchecker, or someone who is lazy about using the shift key, or ignores even the simplest rules of punctuation would never be my perfect person. I understand that poor typing is not a sign of having nothing intelligent to share but it can be almost painful at times to read. A/also, T/that I/internet P/protocol T/that R/requires Y/you T/to T/type L/like Y/you H/have A/a S/stutter G/gives M/me A/a H/headache. I/i S/spent W/way T/too M/much T/time T/typing T/this. W/whee.
