Vad, How much would you charge for one of those? And is staining the wood an option? I'd be looking for a pretty bright cherry and then a clearcoat.

Black Boot Blast,I just listed the wooden collar on eBay. There is a link down in the Marketplace / Artisans section.The light oil finish I put on it would except a stain. Also, bear in mind that this is a magnetic closing so no real security but then it is made of wood! [;)]The rare earth magnets are very strong and it does take a firm tug to open it. It's also a one of a kind... until we see what Blindmage comes up with. I have a feeling his will be different.

thanks for all the help! i've been thinkinh of suing rare earth ones too, but stronger ones, and i need the collar flat, not turin style, that's the tricky part, making it thin, but not too thin.

can you lay it up with say a wire or flat metal band in the center of the layers for a stiffener? Ron

embroidery hoop?? That would work. They even have the holes through which a small padlock could go! Quilting hoops would be too big, I think

I made one out of alternating maple and cherry segments, basically put together like a barrel. I sanded it for shape on a spindle sander. I forget how many segments and exactly what the miter cut was. I was haveing the same delima with the how to close it part. I had some chest hardware and a hinge. Making wooden hinges isn't that difficult, and jatoba would be and excellent wood due to its hardness. You could have a similar hinge with a drop in pin to hold the front together. I wonder if you couldn't use some kind of a scarf joint. Were you planning on steam bending, laminating or cutting it out of a solid chunk? As all the rest, would love to see it when it is done.

Were you planning on steam bending, laminating or cutting it out of a solid chunk? going back and forth between cutting it out of a solid chunk and bending. the demesionins are, max of 1 inch wide, and 1/4 inch in thickness, i'm thining 4 rod rare earther magents in the center, aka the thickest part as the outer surface will have a cooper to it. 2 on each side of the opening, the 1/8 x 1/8 inch rod magenets have a 2lb pull on them, think that'll be enough, with one on each end of the removable section? this one will be for show, the next will have adreware and be for play.
