Coraline -> Seeking Suggestions: Dungeon / Playroom (7/29/2007 2:24:07 PM)

Greetings!

I recently moved into a home with a seperate, cozy room downstairs I plan on turning into a devoted Dungeon / Playroom. I'm looking for any suggestions from you lovely Masters on those things you wouldn't be in a Dungeon without. Of course I have several easily portable items I carry in my toy bag but now I have the pleasure of my own permanent space. Decor is also an important element for me, I have quite a collection of iron candle holders, dark silk tapestries and other Gothic items that will finally have a home. :)

Eventually I plan on a St. Andrew's Cross (preferable one I can break down for transport), there is a built in table/workbench, and an older "vanity table" in there for now. I do plan on moving in a few years so nothing too structure altering. I can get away with some wall bolts and potentially a few weight bearing ceiling bolts too.

The space in 11' x11' ish (a bit small, I know), the only drawback is the nearest bathroom is upstairs, there is a utility sink on the same level though.

Thank you so much!

Weight bearing ceiling bolts are wonderful, and especially if you have high ceilings. Wall bolts should also be able to bear weight--presumably, people will be pulling on them, no?

I've enjoyed playing on portable massage tables fitted with attachment points. We have an X cross at our home playroom, and it's nice, too--and not too structure-altering. We also fitted that room (which is a little bigger than yours, but not much) with springy "gym flooring"--that stuff that interlocks that many martial arts studios seem to use--which makes it relatively comfortable to lie down on it. Drawback: it doesn't take well to spike heels--I've punched a hole in it when not walking carefully.

On pervertable furniture:

A low table or ottoman can become a spanking bench relatively easily--check out garage sales and discount furniture retailers, and Craigslist, if you have it in your city. If you feel that black is most appropriate for a dungeon, anything can get painted.

A chair fitted with attachment points would be nice, too--it doesn't have to be any fancy bondage chair, just something sturdy that you've modified.

Those metal-framed futons that were popular some time ago seem easy enough to rig up for bondage--use bike locking cables if you like.

Because it's a relatively small room, you may want to think especially carefully about arranging the space. (This means both aesthetically, and, if you're trying to make it a multi-player space, getting a friend to stand around with you and swing impact implements. I think your ideas about atmosphere sound nice, although I'd caution you against dark or very saturated paint on the walls, (which might fit well with the decor) as it can make a relatively small room feel oppressive.

PairOfDimes, you've given some sound advice.  Just remember to think of weight when creating playspace. HomeDepot is your friend, IKEA(though I love IKEA) is not [:D]

KnightofMists -> RE: Seeking Suggestions: Dungeon / Playroom (7/29/2007 2:52:24 PM)

frankly... this is very subjective.  I would consider what kind of plays you enjoy and/or desire to do and set it up that suits those wants/desires.

I am in the process of moving... and will once again have to build a dungeon.  The new room is shaped alittle different and maybe just alittle bigger.  I expect to have much of what I had before.... problem is.. I don't have the storage space like I had before.... so... I will have to revisit what I want to keep and what I want to get rid of.

One think that I will not do with out... is the chain system on the ceiling.  I loved the feel and use of them from my last dungeon after I put them in... and they will be welcome addition this time around.

I am also going to retain my bondage bed as well as the horse.  The cage is likely going to be useable as well.   I will also maintain the dark decore since I enjoy the closed in feeling it gives.  It has a impact on the mindset of the bottom that I enjoy.  It still a work in progress so... I am looking forward to the doing of it over the next few months.

chellekitty -> RE: Seeking Suggestions: Dungeon / Playroom (7/29/2007 5:31:15 PM)

well for lighting options (something not mentioned) i would suggest that in addition to the candles for the flickering effect that you get some electric wall sconces...and get rid of any over head light and/or fan (they are the biggest pain in the arse for playing in a small area)
something thats really hot for me is mirrors...we have a friend who's now grown up and moved away daughter wanted a dance studio...so they have a building outback with nice wooden floors, a wall of mirrors and a small loft...best at home private play space i have ever seen...always the "hot spot" when they have spanko parties (which are different because they pride themselves on no-protocol and bratting=invatation to play, at least around here)...so...a wall or at least a large pannel of 6 ft tall mirrors would be something i wanted...also good to make eye contact without stopping beating on a sub...

furniture can be so different from person to person...i would say because its a smaller area the st andrews cross (thats bolted with weight bearing bolts to the wall) and weight bearing bolts in the ceiling would be as far as you want to go...if you want seating in the area and a sofa or love seat is too big a nice office chair or two and floor pillows work well (floor pillows are really easy to make and if you do so you can pick whatever fabric you want to create whatever mood you want)... if you're more into sensation than impact you can add more furniture...most impact requires swinging room...if you're really really really into something like medical play save up for specific furniture...you don't have to have everything at once....oh and duh....a collapsable spanking bench or something like it to just lean over is always a good idea...

good luck
chelle

Hey now, IKEA has great accessories, storage ideas, and some of the best candles that are body friendly!

How much are you willing to spend?  I think these people are pretty cool if you want something custom built.

I don't have one of those yet but the floggers I got from the site below were good.  Their furniture looks to be good as well.

It has already been said but, the specific items really depend on what you want.  A medical table isn't much use if you aren't into medical play, for example.

I have a room in my house that is a designated dungeon and it is about the same size as your room.  I've found that items that can easily be moved/broken down/put away have worked the best when dealing with a small space.  My cross is free-standing so I can move it out of the way or lean it against the wall when necessary.  My bondage table is a converted massage table (best investment I've ever made) so I can keep it folded up in the closet.  The puppy cage I have breaks down into 6 flat pieces so it can be stored as well.  All of my toys and small gear are either in multi-drawer plastic storage containers that are on wheels or hanging in the closet.  Really, the only things I have that can't be moved easily are my ceiling bolt and the chaise lounge.

LadyHugs -> RE: Seeking Suggestions: Dungeon / Playroom (7/30/2007 8:02:38 PM)

Dear Coraline, Ladies and Gentlemen;

In creating a dungeon space, my personal rules are: Keep it simple, keep it safe and keep it clean.

Limits to actual play space as far as being free to use all the whip strokes and single tail strokes you wish to do and, keep in mind guests who are higher and longer length of strokes.

It is amazing how many things can be stored against the ceiling and pull down much like stair ladder to an attic--can be a rack or an "H" frame enclosed on the top and bottom making cube on top of cube support which fonts aren't able to provide.  Retracted, it can lay against the ceiling, down it can be affixed to a flat board that can be the base and restrict movement.  It could be possible to make it a ladder, with a X frame on one side and an H frame on the other side.  It can also be considered, to have a closet for your toy/tool collection, open it up like an and it can be like a rack holding your toys/tools rather flat against the wall and closed, you can lock it up as to keep sticky fingers from making off with your collection.  In the corner, a Triangle or corner cage works very well.  Much like a China corner display case, it provides cage in an off and out of the way space.  In hanging over head bondage; I favor ox wagon single trees (it is a stout wood length with two metal ends with "O" rings and in the middle it has a loop of metal that is stout.  It can be removed if necessary or, you can have two hung in a well placed measurement as to hang a chain suspended rack/swing.  There you can wax, bondage tie down table someone, swing them in bondage as well.  Remove the stiff board rack that can either be plywood board with support or a plain door from a hardware store and or from someone's renovations.  Then, with the two single trees and or 4 chain section, put a rubber or leather sling and you can have a different furniture piece entirely, such as a fisting and or other activities.  Adding cuffs via double end snaps, you have bondage points there.  On a budget, you can get a horse stall guard that is meant to restrain 1500 lbs horses.  One can also use an overhead chain canopy as to have a multiple point bondage station.  This can work in harmony with the rack or sling.  For example thread rope in a chain loop and tie weight on one end while clamping to a genital area with the other end.  Tension will move and stay no matter what the victim's body does, e.g. twist, turn and move. One can always use the wall as stations but, I would have the tallest buddy to swing whips and or single tails in, as to give an idea of ideal whip zone areas.  Some spaces can do well with a bunk bed converted into a bondage island; which self supports inside the swing, the suspended rack, slide panels on the exposed sides by using channel iron (much like sliding bedroom closet doors but much more stout;) to slide frames in, such as X, H, A and or I frames and peg them into a fixed place.  One can have two frames side by side if wished.  The short end/head/foot side; a single panel can provide a whip station as well.  Using chain bolted on the sides and top and bottom can provide bondage anchors and or provide places to thread rope as to create bondage patterns.  It can be where a panel can be in support as to make a spider web.  I set up fire play/waxing play in a place where it doesn't block anybody's escape.  If there is carpet, I highly recommend getting tounge and grove floor panels, to create a impromptu floor and when done, can pick back up and store in a box.  Putting plastic down under it, should catch the wax bits and then shake it out outside for easy cleaning.

My personal preferences in setting up any dungeon, is to keep all sharp sides of furniture, shelves and things waist down.  Thrashing about, knocking into objects by people of different heights is something to make 'safe.'  I also have an electrician to put plenty of electrical outlets in as to permit ease of access and cut down on overloading outlets with too many plugs.  Further, I have first aid supplies obvious and well stocked.  Also having means to clean your equipment is very important.  Having spare lightbulbs tucked somewhere should something burn out saves time and having it somewhere tucked in the rafter area of the ceiling--it is out of the way.  I also recommend having glow sticks around important places, like a fire extinguisher, the escape door to the outside and emergency kit with flashlights ready to use.  Having shake and use flashlights will avoid the need to replace batteries and or need to recheck them.

Having cut outs of what you have, in a space you have in paper form, you can get an idea of what is the best layout for you and your personal dungeon space.

Just a few thoughts.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
Lady Hugs

If you do want dark walls, you can tack up black, or whatever dark color sheets you'd like. Get straight pins, cut in half with wire cutters. then use the straight pins instead of nails, which would leave larger holes in the wall. Straight pins are easy to take down and patch up when you do move and no coat upon coat of white paint trying to cover up the dark paint later on.

I love having my playspace so close-you will too.  I have a bondage room that is akin to what you describe.  The color is very important, it sets the mood.  I adore purple, being the wino I am am, I chose a gorgeous claret paint for the walls and maroon velvet drapes-very pimpy sexy, and all my equipment in there is black.  Having a very wide bed makes strap-on use comfy for me, there is a cage underneath that I love, a throne for my supplicants to bow before me and a stiff highback plain wood chair thats perfect for otk's.  I actually use the cross least of anything, I love giving a flogging or caning to a bent over or prone boy.  Storage of non-hangable items is the biggest obstacle-I am still working on that, things that should be handy but not in the way like my cbt toy collection and the way too many dildos I have.  Have a great time creating your space-best of luck to you!

LadyHugs, those are great suggestions.  this thread makes me wish I had the room to set up a dungeon

You can find many uses for a 6 foot section of 6 foot tall metal fencing attached to the wall.
