(CBS) It's graduation day at the world's largest medical school. Among the sea of 2,000 graduates in lab coats are eight Americans, CBS News correspondent Kelly Cobiella reports, new doctors educated in Communist Cuba.

Evelyn Erickson is from Washington Heights in New York City. She was lured to Cuba's Latin American School of Medicine by the promise of a free education — a gift of sorts from the Cuban government.

Fidel Castro started the school in 1999. His goal was to train people at no cost, in return for their pledge to practice medicine in poor communities back home — an offer extended to a handful of U.S. students in 2001.

i for one- say this illegal immigration must stop. now OUR drs are crossing the border to serve folks in that other country? /foot stomp/

On one hand sorta chokes me up that little cuba is helping the poor in the big usa. especially with soaring prices and our big deficit. On the other hand one cant help but wonder about a sheep in wolfs clothing.

Cuba is helping Cuba. Countries...even states do that all of the time. Will cover the entire college bill as long as you commit so many years working there for them after you graduate.

It isn't uncommon at all.

Whats wrong with that ? I believe Cuba has more doctors per square yard, who are available to the poor, than probably anywhere in the world.
This trade embargo on Cuba that the US imposes. Does that mean only US firms shouldn't deal there or nobody can ?
