I found a belt with patterned studs that will be great for added sensation. What I want to do is fold the belt in half and glue the two sides together. Is there an adhesive that will hold the leather together without making it abnormaly stiff?

Phin,

Barge cement - remains flexible over the life of the leather, and is stronger than the leather fibers so will hold up until the point the leather rips.  Follow the instructions on the product very carefully in order to get a full strength bond.

Barge cement
Is that a brand name or is it a trade name?

Will I find it in the Wal-mart craft section or would I be better off looking in a craft or leather store?  Thanks much for the information

Jewel Glue by Delta is a good one. Easy to find, inexpensive and a good product. Walmart does carry it in the craft section.

Barge Cement is Contact Cement. It is the brand than most cobblers used before other brands of contact cement became more readily available...therefore many people consider it the penultimate in leather adhesive. It can be found at Tandy and other leather shops but usually not at general craft stores.

I also use DAP Original contact cement and have not found any difference in durability, adhesion or flexibility. It is carried at HomeDepot, Lowes, WalMart etc.

Follow instructions..and be careful. It is flammable until cured and also nasty stuff to inhale.

Then what do they consider to be the ultimate?

i've had good luck with Barge Cement as well, i found it at an outdoorsy-type shop, of all places (was looking for, and found, proper climbing-rated carabiners)... apparently it can be used for repairing tents and other silly accoutrements of people who disdain indoor plumbing.

If you distrust glue, use rivets spaced every couple of inches.

It isn't that I distrust glue, I just didn't know what to use. I would have bet that Elmers isnt a good bet. That was the limit of my knowledge. My preferance would be to sow it together, but I dont feel like sowing with a hammer...

Edited to clarify my words...

Damned 'P' words and multitasking.

I should have typed 'pre-eminent'

I'd rivet it between the studs, both for strength as well as sheer evil presence... heh heh heh

Good old Elmer's white glue.

I've gone through many gallons of Barge Cement over the last thirty years, but sometimes the simplest solution is the best.

cheers

Naw.. no more lawyers. :-)

Looking forward to seeing the finished result.. I've made a mental note to go hit some Goodwill stores to look for studded belts.. :-)

Phin,

if you only need a little you can also get Barge Cement in 2 ounce tubes at Ace Hardware.  BTW - if you need strength for something like a sling or anything that will be weight bearing nothing beats #9 copper rivets and burrs.  Punch all your mating holes, use the Barge Cement to bond (you can use golf tees to get all the holes aligned before you clamp), and then rivet.  If you are interested in sewing leather once again it is best to bond first with cement, then pre-mark and drill the holes for the stitches with a bit slightly smaller than the diameter of the needles you are using.  Best running stitch I have found for doing leather work is referred to as saddle stitching - needle at both ends of the thread and send each needle through the hole so the thread crosses itself and then tie a square knot and pull it tight into the hole.  This way if the thread breaks on either face of the leather the stitching cannot unravel.

instynctive, Actually I found the belt a a store we have in the area called Rugged Warehouse, they sell factory seconds and such I paid more for the DAP than I did for the belt.

lisub4one, after looking at the belt again I think that the adhesive will be the best touch, but I will keep your directions for the sewing. they very well might get used in the future.

I'e found Barge's at Jo-Ann's Fabrics, Long's, Wal-Green's, most hardware stores, shoe repair places, Tandy, Michael's, Dom Depot, etc. It's pretty good stuff.

Lessons learned here:

1. don't use a belt you got off of the clearance rack at a factory seconds store...
2. know when to say when on the glue
3. make a relief cut in the leather where the fold needs to go.

oh well at least I am throwing out a belt i only payed a buck for...
