Vent- I live a block from the libary and was walking there to return my books and movies on the way a movie fell out I didn't realize it and a car ran it over. So I picked up walked it straight up to the desk explained what happend and offered to replace it. The librarian was extreamly rude told me I should be banned from the libary!!! I have never damaged anything I have barrowed from the libary. And I donate books and movies to them often.I did the responsible thing. She refused my money to replace it and, was rude. I understand people damage things and that can be aggervating but geezy this was a complete accident that I tried to make it right. I seriously don't understand how people can be so rude and unprofessional.

It sounds like you did the right thing. I can't imagine why she was so rude; maybe she was off her meds or something. Hope it won't dim your pleasure in utilizing the library in the future.

Casie,
I have to agree that's totally uncalled for.  Accidents do happen and you tried to do the right thing.  I've mentioned here before that I spent nearly 5 years as a country library director before my move to Master.  I'm currently applying at a couple libraries here now as well.  I love the atmosphere of libraries and I always had very liberal policies toward patrons such as yourself who didn't make a habit of stealing or destroying items but who inadvertently damaged something and offered to replace it.  I always kept in mind - as this librarian should - that libraries are taxpayer supported in large measure.  You, as a taxpayer, have a part in paying for those materials when they are purchased.  I see that as a reason to give everyone at least one break.  If she wasn't the director, then she has a supervisor there.  I would suggest you speak with that supervisor and explain what happened.  You may find he/she is much more sympathetic to your situation.

Here in Little Rock, Master's truck was broken into and several books on CD from the library were stolen.  He went to the library director and explained and she held him responsible for not one cent of the replacement costs.  The director of your library may have some compassion and understanding like that as well.  Give it a shot.  The worst that could happen is that he/she can be just as rude and then they have a boss too.  Don't take it lying down.  You're a responsible library patron and don't deserve such treatment.  Go on a crusade...lol.....luci

When faced with rude librarians, I normally ask to see the director, especially in a situation such as yours.  I too have damaged and/or lost books that were owned by the library; simply explain the situation to the director, reiterate your offer to compensate the library for the materials, and mention the rude person to the director.

The librarian in question may be having a bad day, but taking it out on your patrons is a quick way to lose patrons!

That's for sure, QuietlySeeking.  Front-desk librarians can be super polite all day and no one may notice but let one be rude and word will spread like wildfire.  Speaking with the director is the only way to go for sure.  It never hurts to try.........luci

A variation on that theme would be a letter or e-mail. Sometimes putting a complaint in writing gives it more weight.

Damn, my problem is they want me to pay for a book I didn't damage.
