Level -> China says: "we're poor, and no threat" (7/31/2007 4:36:31 AM)

China on Tuesday deflected U.S. pressure for a faster rise in the yuan and bolder economic reforms by telling visiting Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson that it is still poor and poses no threat to anyone.

Paulson's visit coincides with a drive by U.S. lawmakers, frustrated by America's record trade deficit with China, to press Beijing upon pain of sanctions to allow open markets to set the yuan's value.

Vice Premier Wu Yi said at the start of her talks with Paulson that she was happy he had first visited poor Qinghai province in western China and had seen for himself the big difference with rich cities such as Beijing and Shanghai.

"In making this contrast, you can understand -- who could China threaten? China still has areas as developmentally backward as Qinghai," Wu told Paulson while reporters were in the room.

yeah and if you believe that we have some lead tainted childrens toys and toxic tooth paste to sell you ! china no threat ? is that the same china that shot the GPS satelite out of the sky a few months ago?
Now american polititions  want to pressure china about OUR trade deficite? how absurd! what did they think would happen when they loosened the sanctions and tarrifs which were put into place by much wiser men years ago ? Did they realy think we , with the cost of labor in this country, could equaly trade with  other countries  in the world? please tell me what we manufacture in this country the people of mexico, canada or china  can afford to buy from us?   I know  they can't afford to buy   the BULLSHIT produced by american polititions "on the take" from  greedy coporate lobbyist who lobbied for all the " fair" trade bills? Its " free trade" with canada, but try buying an automobile there and bringing it into this country ! But I am sure THEY are not that stupid! DID THEY ( american polititions)REALY THINK "FAIR TRADE "WOULD BE FAIR TO THE WORKING CLASS PEOPLES OF THIS COUNTRY? If so they should ALL be fired !And if they didnt THEY SHOULD ALL BE FIRED ! just keep believeing your vote counts and you have bought into the biggest scam IN HISTORY!   joey

Well, welcome to the boards joey, I think you might get on well here.

One problem with your post though, you used the word FIRED when it should've been SHOT.

Free trade is a wonderful thing, for the big conglomerates. For us though it is something different. They say the economy is strong, what that means is that they have alot of money.

My neighbor is one of the very very few I know still making any kind of money in a factory. He makes about $35K a year. Thing is, he used to make about $58K, but was fired for one mistake. A costly mistake he admits, but it should've cost him raises etc., not the whole job. But the market is such that each Man's value is diminished. Even the irreplacable are replacable now. Your local McDonald's manager could be an ex-engineer from Ford Motor Company.

That is what they've done for us.

And China, there is nothing we can do about it right now. And I don't see the wisdom in asking them to unpeg the yuan from the dollar when they hold so much in T bills and securities from the US. But then the powers that be haven't been operating in our best interests for quite some time now.

Hmmmmmm, y'know salary comes from when they paid in salt, salurum or whatever, so why do they call being dismissed from a job getting "fired" ?.

Yes, fire them by all means, but do it right, use a firing squad.

I'm not so sure about that. Perhaps as many as fifty percent of the posters here won't believe such rhetoric-- They'll rely on the cable news networks for their truth instead.

Hah, I have an internet buddy visiting me from the UK. At this very moment he is searching my entire cable system for 'real' news. He stopped by Fox and was in his words 'gobsmacked'.

I'm going to try and refrain from adding to this post in regards to China. I've learnt the hard way that my view is really n truly not the view of anyone else I know [8|] .
I haven't the dexterity with words that most here seem to have and I lost my flame retardent catsuit at the cleaners.

"Getting fired" comes from an old Viking tradition of burning down the hut of someone who was no longer wanted in your crew...A drastic, but effective way of getting the point across...
Nowadays, they frame someone they no longer want for sexual harrassment...A vaguely-defined crime that smears them even if they "clear" their name!
