So I want to use a horse hair flogger but have been told that they leave micro welts that are very difficult to heal. I've also been told that they can break off in the skin and can cause infection. What has your experience been, what are the pro's/cons of using one. Does hitting hard/soft make any difference with the supposed "welts" or infection. That seems to be the general opinion of the Doms/subs I've talked to.
        Thanks, Phoenix

There are dangers to be had with any type of flogger.  Yes, a horsehair flogger can cut.  Yes, horsehair can break off and could cause infection.  We make and use horsehair floggers.  They are one of my favortes as i love the way they feel.  I've never had a visible cut.  i've never gotten a welt from one.  I've never gotten any infection from having one used on me.  It is best if a horsehair flogger is a one person flogger and is not used on more than that person.  In my opinion, if used with care it can be as safe as many other floggers.

I'm afraid all the information I can give you is: Don't hit the same spot too much unless you want to scar them. I've got a scar on my back from a horsehair flogger where a dominant flogged the top layers of my skin off. I really couldn't feel the difference so you want to make sure that you are watching the skin carefully.

On the other hand... I still really love them.

This is an area I know well - horse hir floggers are geat and a lot of fun - BUT yes, the micro fibers can cause problems when imbeded in the skin. I had an occasion a few years ago where a "new and unconditioned" horse hair flogger was used on a submissive's private areas - she totally enjoyed the experience but several days later she sent me an e-mail claiming to have " herpies type blisters"...she was, understandably, very upset...After a few more days I received another e-mail explaining what the doctor told her - and she of course appologized since she did not have herpies...the blisters were caused by the micro fibers of horse hair that broke off and imbeded them selves in her pubic area. New Horse Hair Floggers should be washed and conditioned with "Maine-n-tail" Conditioner afterwhich they are safe to use.
I say "safe" since this problem has never hppened with the floggers I conditioned before they were used... We live and we learn.

Thanks thats exactly the type of answer I was looking for. It makes sense that if hair becomes dry it becomes brittle thus breaking. Well I'm off to the tack shop.lol

Horsehair floggers are One person toys and are a LOT of fun to play with :-)

I love the horse hair flogger that he has and I would like for him to get a heavier one as well.  He will swing it full force on my back and it does leave little cuts and marks (I mark very easily).  He also follows it up by spraying alcohol on my back.  That is a wonderful sensation.

A local submissive was flogged with a horsehair flogger and it left infections under the skin which took months to heal - I'm not sure if they ever did, I just know he still had them a couple of years later. They were more or less untreatable as presumably there were fine particles embedded under the skin causing the problem. Whether he was unduly sensitive, or whether the flogger was improperly cleaned, who knows, but it did happen. I played with him months after the event and put some acupressure cups on his back. They promptly filled with blood that seaped up from the mess below the skin. It was not a pleasant experience, shudder
