The sports world has been rocked by a tragic list of allegations that include lying, cheating and naked ambition. But there's more to this contemporary crisis than Barry Bonds and his estranged cronies.
Michael Vick is on the verge of fielding more protest angst than critics lobbed at the synthetic basketball. NBA referees are in position to be under just slightly less scrutiny than the final episode of "The Sopranos." Bud Selig has been unable to score a good kayak deal for McCovey Cove.

And sports fans are not immune from the escalating dread. At any moment, Roger Goodell could suspend the entire league for eight weeks.

But things are never as bad as they seem. Just ask Alex Rodriguez. With that premise as my guide, I've decided to give the prevailing sports landscape a positive spin. I know it seems unreasonably ambitious, but the plan is to identify 66 things and/or people to be thankful for on our long road back to sporting sanity. They will be listed in no particular order, but will be filed under their corresponding activity.

Please note that beer may be listed more than once.

Baseball games make nice background noise for napping.

Damn, absolutely no mention of those tight "ends" that some of us love watching football for to begin with. Or male on male brutality.

Although I will definitely agree with the comment about Bobby Knight. One of the best coaches in the history of college ball. His anger management issues not withstanding. I admire him so much that this former Illinoisan was a die hard Hoosier fan for his tenure.

Although I do have to say that with all the negativity in the media regarding sports lately it's refreshing to see someone trying to look for some of the positive in it all. Great article.

Tiger is the reason I like golf; I saw him play his final amateur match on tv, and have been a fan ever since.

Knight is a great coach, hell, he pulled Texas Tech up out of the mire, that's an accomplishment   I don't like his putting his hands on those kids, though.

It was nice to see a bit of positiveness, I agree, Jo.

Ehh..okay, I was disappointed in the list..but..I'm not a "mainstream sport" type of girl. I agreed with a lot of what he listed, just wish he'd branched out, maybe more into amateur athletics..swimming, diving, gymnastics, skiing, speed skating, bobsled..anything really. (And yes, I follow those even in non-Olympic years, lol). Oh well, my expectations were probably too high, lol...

You know, I love some sports.. playing them.. but enjoying watching others play, when there's a perfectly good field going unused elsewhere..

I guess, just.. watching sports: what's the appeal?

I think he had made mention of ice curling, but space limitations ended up bumping it.

The appeal, for me, lies partially in seeing human beings performing at a high level. But yeah, playing sports is great fun. Soccer especially falls into the "like to play, hate to watch" category.

Ok. I'll try again. Uhhhhh ... the wet grass smell at football games reminds me of being at a county fair.

Is that better?

I'm not sure if you're getting closer, to be honest.

I agree with you completely and would never excuse such behavior in anyone. However the shame of it is that those few incidences have managed to distract from an absolutely brilliant coaching career at every college he's been employed by.

I may not agree with his hands on approach but the man inspired loyalty, admiration and love from his players. Perhaps I'm biased. Look at the latest incident with Michael Prince where the media made a big hoopla and yet Prince and his parents defended Knight's actions as his doing something positive for Prince. Look at how Scott May played in 75 at Regionals even with a broken arm. There's something to be said about his having the highest graduation rate of any college coach in history.

I am from Bloomington and I was one of many that were very pissed off when they let Bobby go.  I don't always agree with his methods, but he did teach his boys to respect him and to respect others.  That was what he got fired over, not touching anyone.  I don't think that IU has been the same since he left, and I don't think it ever will be.

Why to love sports?  Cause football season is almost here and I love football!!!!  Not to mention I am getting a widescreen, HDTV, and an NFL pass so I can watch all of my man Favre's games this year (probably his last).  That is what Master is getting me for my b-day..and I love it!

It makes my blood boil, my body shiver in anticipation, and ...uhhhh...other things really wet
