In a way, the professor's "remnants notion of time" model is roughly (very roughly) similar to the simple wormhole theories... that if you can bend space, time, or a combination of both, so that your beginning point and destination point actually touch, you can open a doorway that allows you to step from one into the other.
I'm waiting for the final results of the Gravity Probe B experiment to be published. This recently concluded experiment involved a satellite in a precision Earth orbit that was taking readings on how gravity can warp space and/or time. It's one of those experiments that few people know about, but could have extreme repercussions on whether some of Einstein's theories are valid or not. I can't wait...
