Bobkgin -> Pimping ourselves in public discussion groups (o.O) (8/3/2007 9:06:49 AM)

Just thought I'd invite you to step back from the seriousness of the various discussions for a light-hearted discussion on the various ways we use public discussion groups like this to enhance our images and draw attention to our profiles.

The number of people who have viewed mine has doubled since I started posting this morning. (O.O)

While this is a wonderful way to introduce one's self and take the profile to a new level by adding the depth of thought that goes into these posts, it seems to come with a certain intrinsic risk, in that those who feel they are not (or no longer) in the limelight might get a bit ... hmm ... peeved with those for whom the limelight shines.

Thus, posts arrive with implicit digs and thrusts of a personal nature. Rather than address the issue raised, it becomes a debate on the mental faculties of the individual challenged.

Of course, the individual who posts such material attempts to position him/her self as the more appealing alternative.

Rather than a (reasonably) objective discussion of the topic, it becomes a circus of posturing.

I often wonder how much bad information is published simply because it is the opposing position to someone who is deemed to be a threat to someone else's ability to attract attention.

Now I am asking you all nicely and respectfully not to let this get flamey or personal.

(O.O)

I find myself chuckling considering the people who are responding to your threads the most are the LEAST likely to have need to be concerned on where limelight goes.

And certainly no one but you knows how many views you are getting, so how would that be cause to spur anyone else to put you down?

CM has a limelight now? Awesome!

Seriously, I don't really think there is a limelight here. Some readers stick to particular forums so if you don't post there they won't even know you exist. Even those who do read all forums, they probably don't read every single one. If you post a lot, you will interact with other regulars, but there doesn't really seem to be a spotlight effect. Of course, the more you post (assuming you post something interesting) the more people will check out your profile. Possibly to check if you are dom or a sub, male or female, or even just where you are in the world.

While flaming does happen, I don't think it happens because people want the spotlight. It seems to happen more because people disagree about something vehemently or because someone just has to be right.

Again, I just doubt the flame wars are a result of "look at me, look at me". It doesn't make sense to me because often times the person you are debating with just isn't a threat. The debates, flame wars, whatever often happen between people who live far away, are in secure relationships, are of the different orientations, or any other thing that would not put them in competition for potential mates.

I don't know why anyone would flame this, unless someone suspects you've aimed this at a specific person.

Asking not to be flamed is a sure fire way of painting your ass red and pointing at it with neon signs...[;)]
I'm not entirely sure the title matches the post.  If your asking if some come onto the CM message board to 'pimp' themselves then hell yeah, I am sure some do.  Do they have their noses put out of joint by not having their posts taken seriously then again, for some I am sure it does happen.

But hell, if your having a hard time (which by your tone and questions, does seem to be the case)  I would just say suck it up and don't let people get to you.  Apart from the fact that it will take you time to get to know the more regular posters and that how they respond isn't all down to 'you'... it's just how they respond to everyone.  It's like getting to know your neighbours... you have no facial expressions - you have no hand gestures.  It is simply words on a screen.  Don't see it as 'posturing' - view it as a learning tool that is only giving you one facet of the gem that an individual poster is.

I think that my wicked sense of sarcasm goes a long way toward promoting the false pose that I am a cynical, overweight, 54 year old man, and greatly helps to conceal the fact that I am really a svelte, wealthy, and naive 22 year old female nympho named Bubbles....

Hmm.. interesting. Generally, I use forums such as these to enhance my 'view' not my image however, in the spirit of the OP, please feel free to go out to my profile which I set up to tell a bit about myself to those with an interest to read (and the time to indulge to get it read!) it so they can get a bit more of an idea of who I am if the 4000+ posts I've made haven't shown them enough already. Yeah, that's rather normal. Lots of folks on the forums like to get a bit more insight into those who post and until you've establish a consistant viewpoint, it's pretty much all there is to go on in judging whether or not someone is a troll or sincere in their questions and answers. In the end, time tells the story anyway.. but we do tend towards the impatient.

Now, now.. no need for paranoia! Believe it or not, you've come into a realm just chalk full of self-aware, fairly articulate individuals with the purpose of debating the issues of the day with sound reasoning and logic.. (with the exception of political & pro-dom threads). Really, truly, no one is out to get you ... yet. [;)]

Subjective assumption there, Bob. I think as you post more and get to know those of us who post frequently, you'll find that we are passionate about our views and, of course, want those views to be understood, but often times we recognize that there will never be a meeting of the minds on a given issue so agree to disagree.. again, exceptions being political & pro-dom threads. We all have our crosses to bear and reside upon, after all.

Generally speaking, untrue.. but when two testosterone laden individuals have at it, all bets are off. It is an exception though rather than a rule of thumb.

[quoteI often wonder how much bad information is published simply because it is the opposing position to someone who is deemed to be a threat to someone else's ability to attract attention.

Rarely. Lighten up, Bob.. this thread was supposed to be a step back from seriousness. [8D]

By decree of the Lord High Priest of the Universe in which I dwell, King Himself, I am only allowed two flames per poster before I must cease and desist such activity or block any given poster from my view, so I always make them count if I deem it a worthy effort or cause (as opposed to just auto-blocking) and there will never, ever be a doubt when I've flamed someone. I certainly wouldn't waste a flame in the Off-Topic forums so no worries on this thread.

CuriousLord -> RE: Pimping ourselves in public discussion groups (o.O) (8/3/2007 11:59:08 AM)

The posturing's a good point- it is a problem on these forums.

Another point I believe is often a major issue.. beliefs. If an individual believes in one thing, yet a strong reasoning differs, this may be taken as an assault to identity, as it is contrary to the belief, and the belief may have been part of the individual's definition of self.

And now you've used it twice in one thread. Something to think about! [8D]
