that is so very relative.  I sometimes like easy listening....soft and quiet and other times metal...loud and glaring.  Depends on my mood and the mood I am trying to convey for the situation.  No formulas here just whatever strikes my mood.

Niky,

even though this topic comes around more often than a cock shot on alt, I Will offer my three bits of advice on music... As far as styles and genres, it has to be something that you and your play partner enjoy... For me and my normal cast of play partners, its music like Manson, Rob Zombie, God Smack, Type O Negitive, Korn, and Nine Inch Nails,  second think  you want to look at, is are the songs by artists you both like play able... in other words can their beat be kept while flogging or caning.  The third thing to look at is how you compose the play list, ideally you do not want to start out with a hard fast beat... you want something slow to warm up the body of the bottom... then after a few minutes, build up to something with a faster harder beat... Look at music that you like, figure out what gets your inner person calm, what helps you to relax, if this music can be pulled into a mix with your partner, without frigging with their head space, then by all means, use it, you will find that after a while and a bit of trial and error, you will find your play list of about 30 songs that can do it for you,  then its just making a couple CD's with different arangements of the songs, or an IPOD shuffle type deal.

If you would like more on this topic, feel free to contact me on the other side

And nothing can jerk you out of the zone quicker than someone pulling up Abba on the sound system, after 'Keine Lust'.

earthycouple,

I actully did a 80s music scene mix and incoperated KNOTB into the scene, it was great for me as the top because some of their songs are very play able... but my poor girl was all fucked up headspace wize because of it... I think I am going to hell....

During the first time I scene with someone I typically pick the music. If they have had a bad past, or were victims of abuse by someone under the guise of being a Master (as often seams to happen in this area) then I want to choose something to put the mind at ease.

In that case I start off with things by Enigma that have no words, a little Beethoven and Mozart. I keep it light in the background. The idea is that they relax. After the first scene or two I don't have a problem letting them choose the music themselves. Once they KNOW that I am not going to hurt them in a bad way then the focus changes from them relaxing to having fun. That is different for each person, so letting them choose the music gives me an idea of what is going to get their head right. After a bit of learning what they like, then I might make the play list myself again to set the correct mood.

I'm a big fan of ambient, electronic, and world music, something with a nice basso vibroso and not too distracting, but also has a ton of energy.  I'd recommend Orbitals "Halcyon + on + on," anything by Rob Dougan, but especially "Clubbed to Death," and my personal favorite Massive Attack's "Angel"  Oh, and I've got a great set of modern variations of Pachelbel's Canon in D (complete with electric guitars, drums, and throbbing bass) that give a nice rhythm without interfering too much.

I prefer Mozart, Wagner, Enigma, and the like, though sometimes traditional Chinese instrumental music works. If it has lyrics, it's got to be opera, that's it.

I've recently picked up two CD's by Tony Barre (BarreParts and Barre Handed) that are pretty good for scene music. Not to overwhelming and can either be played loud or softly in the background.

I also like to play against classic 80's hair bands, like warrent, skid row, winger, motley crue and aerosmith...  I guss there is something about a screaming guitar to accompany a screaming sub that helps get me there
