RiotGirl -> Why (7/1/2005 8:04:46 AM)

Do People ALWAYS ask "where are you from?"

when they REALLY mean "where do you live?"

its got to be a pet peeve of mine.

The question, where are you from. Is asking where are you "native" too. Personally i am native to the bay area california, Washington DC and i was born in Japan.

So to be a smart alec, my response to the "where are you from" i usually say "All over"

(it stumpes em its great) Or i just tell them. i LIVE in florida, near orlando.

But in the 8 years i have been on the net.. its BEEN THE SAME Thing..

"where are you from"

"where are you from"

anyone want to explain this to me?

i mean i am FROM (as in COME FROM, grown, ect ect) Millbrae California

i do not COME from Florida!

And i am not "going" anywhere. i mean if i was in Vegas and some one asked "where you from" (as in coming from)
i'd say florida. As i am COMING from florida.

am i right or am i right? (or am i just out to lunch)?

kisshou -> RE: Why (7/1/2005 8:15:08 AM)

the expression that is a pet peeve of mine is 'real time'.

It is completely illogical.

I cringe when I hear it.

why can't people say 'time spent online' or 'time spent offline'

RiotGirl -> RE: Why (7/1/2005 8:47:50 AM)

HEY! you didnt answer the question! tsk tsk tsk.

ya know what really gets me.. IS people who go off on their own tangents with out answering the question.

<grins, i'm ONLY joking) You umm... opened the door for it!

i do get the real time thing.

As in all TIME is real. i mean if TIME wasnt real, then we wouldnt age during that time would we? And we all tend to age every second of the minute, of the hour of the day of the week of the month of the year of the decade. (lmao)

Um.. i'm finding myself funny today! Okay, back to the topic.

i do understand your complaint and i feel for ya hon! (gives a hug) Terrible atrocity out there!

Truly it makes no sense. i agree.

So um... what do you do real time? <giggles>

EmeraldSlave2 -> RE: Why (7/1/2005 8:59:51 AM)

I always just say "earth" and wait for them to ask a clearer question.

this slave usually answers---"originally, from _____________(insert name of town or state born in) but currently, from _______________(insert name and town currently residing in)"

on a similar note, how about that question "what do you do?"

Youtalkingtome -> RE: Why (7/1/2005 9:21:54 AM)

Not everyone wants to know where you live.But may want to know where you are from.I ask where are you from meaning where were you born and raised.When I lived in Florida I was asked where I was from.And I said Maine.This happens all the time in Florida because a lot of or most people that live there were not born there.
I asked this just the other day to a woman that was from northern Maine where I was born and raised.But we both live in central Maine.
I am sure that some people ask where you are from meaning where do you live.
My answer to your question is that most don't know what they are asking or saying.

lonewolf05 -> RE: Why (7/1/2005 10:30:55 AM)

oh my. where are you from?
born, bred and raised right here in good ole u.s. of damned a.
otherwise? i'm just good ole boy, from the iowa corn fields and damned proud of it.
no. not a redneck. just a good ole boy. there IS a distinct difference.

if ya wanna go deeper? i was raised in a very strict ''old country'' background, paternal thoughtline. a man walks into the house, the womenfolk shut the hell up.
the man runs the show babygirl. like it or lump it's the way it is. pa always told me until you are 21 or can whup my ass ya got no say so in the house. so i was told to leave at 16.

now, at 51, i have turned to maternal, D/s. and i am finally, now, breaking out of the old norms. all,,,,,,,my elders are dead and gone. no siblings, no wifey poo, no girlfriend, no pets no kids no waterbeds. need i say more? ok. so it's TMI. sorry. but it's what "I" tell folks when they get nosy.

take care.

the wolf.

kc692 -> RE: Why (7/1/2005 12:03:29 PM)

If they ask where I am from, I tell them the area I was born and raised, which is not where I live now. I tend to take their questions literally...where I am from is where I was raised, where I live is present day.....

perverseangelic -> RE: Why (7/1/2005 12:34:57 PM)

I rather like "What do you do" I find it gives insight into the person. ;)

I mean, I answer "what do you do?' with "live" or "study" or something that sums up what I -do- ;) Not my occupation.

I always answer "where are you from?" with my home town though. I never though to do otherwise.

I do agree on the realtime thing, but for the life of my I can't think of a better, compact, expression

CalliopePurple -> RE: Why (7/1/2005 12:47:10 PM)

I'm never sure how to answer "where are you from?" I know where I was born, but I'm 19 years old and am currently living in my seventeenth (or so) house in my fifth state. I don't really have a hometown.

*rofl* I worry that if I ever get to 2500 posts they will name me 'thread hijacker'

When asked where I am from, the answer I give depends on where the person who is asking me lives.

I actually live right near you RiotGirl. [:D]

Yeah i love that question! As well as any question similiar. Especially the ones where i get (so what did you do in hong kong)

My response - Enjoy my life

But see thats not even specific enough for me. i was born in Japan, spent 4 years in DC area and then spent 10 years being raised in the bay area of Cali.

Not that i was actually "raised" up from the ground......

My answer to that is "Whatever I want pretty much".

stormsfate -> RE: Why (7/1/2005 2:44:56 PM)

That's a question I would ask of someone if I thought I recognized an accent from the area where I grew up. Its rather distinctive, and I enjoy speaking with people from "back home".

<giggling> As you probably don't have that hillbilly accent, being born and raised in Japan, DC and California, it isn't likely you will ever hear me ask it of you. [;)]

best regards,
f

ShiftedJewel -> RE: Why (7/1/2005 2:49:08 PM)

I honestly believe the question I hate more then anything is when someone comes to my home, being the polite host I offer them something to drink and they say "Do you have any water?" NO, I live in the middle of the freakin' desert and have never heard of indoor plumbing!! Anyway, I just tell them "Nope, sorry, just ran out"

Jewel

No way! So uhhh.. where are you from?

i'm um from "all over" Specifically; Japan, Cali, Dc, and Hong kong

and um to as what i do "enjoy my life"

As for answering in specifics, i tend to do that as well and they tend to get dumfounded as they realise i am not in any of those places. And calliope i completely here you! In cali i lived in 4 different houses in 3 different cities (or towns), in DC i lived in 6 different places and um 3 different houses.. and um in Hong kong, i lived in 2 different places (but thats only if you consider staying at a different place each week not counting!) And as in Florida.. i've lived in um.. lets see 5 different places and cities/towns.. and that doesnt count the time i lived in New York (upstate, boarding school) or Alabama and um........ i think thats it. Really i try and knock it down to the most time or regional area i spent in one place.

I mean if you spent half your life on the "east coast" Say you're from the east coast. Or heck go even further and say norther america!

Oh and the NEXT question they always ask me is "are you a military brat" Which i have a hard time with as...... well yes, but no. More of a government brat, but what REALLY confuses them is when i tell them i didnt move so much because of either! (or been to so many places.) AND since we are on the topic of PLACES i'm gonna spill mine out

Japan
Hong Kong
China
Mexico
Hawaii (yeah i know its US soil.. so was the part of japan i was in)
England
Ireland
Scotland
France
Germany
Austria
Prague
New Zealand
Australia

i swear i'm forgetting some where, but thats what i get for having a bad memory. And yet, i'm the least traveled in my immdediate family. Damn crappers just took a trip to India and a year or so before that Africa. Not TO MENTION my older brother's been to Amsterdam and god knows where else while he waas stationed in Germany. Or all the fricken places my little sister went to with her school trips while she was going to school in France. LIKE the fricken ALPS (grrr)

yeah i um.. travel. ONE of these days, when my kid is old enough to drag around, i'm going to back pack through Europe darn it. And another one of these days, i'm going to move to the UK (which is where my Father resides as of now)

stormsfate -> RE: Why (7/1/2005 2:56:01 PM)

Awww, Jewel...they are just trying to be polite (blushing madly as she realizes how many times she has asked that very question). [;)]
