Subs, did you experiment with self bondage (or still do) as you got into kink, testing it out to see if you could get away from anything?  I'm surprised there are not more "magicians" who got interested in the craft because they could have cute assistants put them in shackles and straitjackets.  Any aspiring escape artists here perfecting their skills?

Ooh, i saw a great one on a cruise ship once... very flashy-looking couple, doing the traditional "sawing the woman in half" bit... except that before the box was locked, he put leather restraints on her wrists and ankles and had someone come up from the audience to inspect them... and what really got me was the collar... i couldn't really see where it added significant difficulty to the trick, but when he buckled it around her neck, then pulled it tight to the end of the table with a chain, it was HOT. Woof!
i assume you've seen http://www.maxcita.com ? Expensive, but it certainly answers your question [:)]
Having "grown up kinky" before the Internet delivered every variety of porn to every corner of the globe, i read every book in the library about escapology, along with torture, orthopedics, and serial killers... would that count as "looking for love in all the wrong places"? Heh. Although i imagine i'm lucky i never discovered the "ice in the stocking" key release... sooner or later that would have made for a very awkward discussion with the fam.
i find it hard not to think about escaping when we do bondage... which is unfortunate, because if i know that i can slip out easily it loses something.
i'm apparently a lot more flexible than one would think to look at me [&:]

Dangerous. Getting stuck tied up alone can kill ya...but if you're intent on doing it, a combination wheel lock that can be set is a good idea. Make sure you know all but two wheels, and you can set those two with eyes closed. That leaves 100 combinations, which can be worked through in about 5 minutes, starting from 00 and working to 99.

Again...don't do it.

Growing up, I was always the tyer, rarely the tyee. I was never tied up so that I couldn't get loose.

Crap, forgot my point. What i meant to add was that after watching that scene, i would have bet anything that the couple was D/s offstage as well. You could just tell from watching them do it that it was more than just part of the act.

Self-bondage can be dangerous, yes. As can couples bondage. There are ways to make it safer- have a backup method ready (you'd much rather wait for the key to fall than cut through those $120 leather cuffs... you'd much rather cut through the cuffs than have a diplomatically-worded obituary), set yourself up to be discovered if all else fails (the element of danger there can be hot in itself, although it requires judgement), resist the urge to practice breath control (damn sub frenzy), etc. If you use an electric timer (i know guys on another board who are working on complex computer programs running electrical toys, lights, water valves, etc., in addition to dropping the key) make sure it will drop the keys if the power goes out or the battery dies, etc...

There have been times that i've gone into it not knowing for certain that i'd be able to get out, and the rush was intense... but i consider that to be among the "dumbass lapses of judgement" moments in life... Now everything is planned very carefully. But even the planning and anticipation has its moments [;)]

I once met a guy who claimed he "pretended to struggle so the domme wouldn't feel bad when he escaped to quickly."  I guarantee I took care of that cocky attitude *S*  I had him bound in such a way I was afraid to leave him for even a moment for fear he'd struggle and strangle.  A bit dangerous, but I'm experienced, had scissors handy and never left his side. (kinda like a mom does't leave a UM in the tub alone for fear of drowning)

See?
This is an important lesson for the 60-odd folks who have looked at this thread and thought "well, I can't admit to that, I'll be on the record as a desperate wanker!"- remember this:
While all the good li'l service subbies are doing the chores, and taking care of their own depraved little needs so that they don't have to bother their partners... the Smart-Assed Masochists are having all your fun.

That's right, the toad made himself a mission for me. I accepted.   It was too much fun really.  Though I did have MY way with him when I was done and he learned needle play isn't that bad *S
