For anyone who is even remotely intersted in current events, knows CNN.com.  Am I the only one who hates the format they've moved to?  Fewer headlines, more glitz, and what seems to be a triple in celebrity news?

Totally ridiculous... I've given up on them. If I'm needing a TV news fix, it's Bloomberg, BBC or Current. And with Current I have the satisfaction of knowing that the story actually means something to the person reporting it... even if it's sorta fluffy on the edges.

The only Turner channels I watch are Cartoon Network and TCM. Pretty pathetic, no?

Well Stephan....

Conduct a test thread in the off-topic section that revolves around Paris Hilton, and see who/how many reply....then you'll begin to understand why CNN changer their format.

R,

You might be right, but I don't have to like it.

Bleah.

I've been bitching about it for a couple months. At about the same time, I noticed that the BBC news website pretty much mirrors CNN. Same headlines in the same order and about the same percentage of  National Enquirer type bullshit.

For years I would go to the CNN site right after reading my primary source, the NY Times. If the Times goes "pop", I'll have to revert to my old strategy: living in a world of fantasy and make-believe.

Haven't been to CNN in a long time so haven't noticed any changes.  My favorite news source at least within this country is google.  They surf all of the websites and give you a sampling of pretty much anyone you want.  The top headlines.
So, on my google homepage I have 12 different sites with various headlines on them.  Then of course there is also google news.
Al Jazeera for war news.  Yahoo and MSN from time to time.

Well, I get all over the place.  Though google does it up well for me.

One of the reasons I'm learning Arabic is that in addition to wanting to get along in Morocco sans guide is that I like watching Al Jazeera and want to watch it in the original... But here in THc, we don't get that channel, so the closest I can get is Current... <sigh>

So your old strategy was to watch FOX NEWS?  :-)

I do dislike their new format. It is most upsetting. I already watched BBC news as a supplement to CNN, but now I've gone over to MSNBC as my primary (which even that isn't always great) and still watch BBC.

It is truly a shame in this country that celebrity gossip takes up so much of the public's time. I also find it distasteful how the media latches on to a small story and all of the sudden it is the only news you can find. For weeks the only thing on every single news channel (MSNBC included) was the damn Anna Nicole story. I could not care less about Anna Nicole. I hate that. There was nothing else going on in the entire world that they couldn't cover anything but the death of a quasi-celebrity? Grrr...

I also dislike the focus on things only happening in the States. The world is much larger than Americans tend to think it is. Perhaps if we paid a bit more attention to that we might be better off...

I've come to the conclusion that the most fair and balanced coverage on TV news is... The Daily Show.
At least they *know* how silly they're being.

And the point of watching Al Jazeera in Arabic is that I'm watching it in Arabic. The English feed is different. Pretty good, but still not the same as the main one. It's like the difference between BBC Globe, BBC US and "vanilla" BBC.

If it's any consolation, the TV show claiming to be our "local news" just spent almost 20 minutes advertising American Idol

i get most of  my news from The Daily Show, but for the most part i stay in my Denial Bubble (pat. pending). Things are much quieter there.
