Currently I have a dalmatian. He is absolutely adorable, kids always want to pet 'Pongo.' Downside, he's a complete moron. We did adopt him, but the woman who gave him up had gotten him from a breeder. If he wasn't so stupid he could be show dog, but all that inbreeding, well it isn't good for anybody. He's a complete sweetheart though! Wouldn't hurt a fly, probably would lick it to death (as well as any intruder).

I also had a Golden Retriever. Great family dog, loyal and fun for kids.

~Fledgling
that is funny, there seems to be no in-between, I have an extremely smart dalmation...but I had her bred and she had 10 puppies---they sold except for the last one, he was SO stupid he would get lost on his way to the door....never saw a dog so stupid in my life--I gave him away along with the 'puppy trainer' and akc papers just to get this kid to take that dog...

I lost the world's sweetest dog last spring and I still miss her intensely. She was a golden retriever, got along with kids of all ages, horses, and other dogs. She saw no purpose in cats though and disapproved of deer on the lawn. Deer she would run till they got off the lawn and back into the woods and then she would turn away. They could be 20 feet away and that was fine as long as they didn't step onto the grass.

She loved car rides but hated boats. She chased away a bear who was trying to get in the back door once, probably her finest hour.

for the moment, we have two german shepherd dogs.  they're not going to be able to keep living with us.  we have to move from our house (3 br, fenced yard) to an apartment (2 bedrooms no yard, no patio) and i cant do it any longer.

the dogs have injured me in being enthusiastic about my company....i cant walk them because they can knock me over and drag me.  its terribly sad, and we're making sure they go to good homes, but i'm unhappy about the whole thing.  i think the thing that makes me most unhappy is that the man decided to get the dogs, knowing that i couldnt physically handle them....and hasnt done much in the way of training/disciplining/taking care of the dogs.

kitten, who is DONE with pets....unless we get an aquarium again.

my Harry dog is a mutt too, and is definitely the best dog ever.  He can even spell.  Ok...he can't spell, but he recognizes C-A-R :)  What's best about him, though, is that he is a snuggler.  Can't beat that.

ty all for the comments. Yes, i have researched dog breeds and i have looked in PetFinder.

I even hear about how expensive it is when they get sick from a co-worker that has spent anywhere from $5,000.00 to $7,000.00 on her one dachshund alone becuase she got very ill. thank god she is doing well. Her other dachshund is now also ill. So far doing ok.

I am going to volunteer at an animal shelter because i think it will help give me experience in how to handle, bath, feed, etc. I don't want to jump into this lightly.
I have wanted a dog my whole life. right now there are other things going on in my life and adopting a dog and cat right now have to take a back seat.

I will use that one link for how to pick a dog and how my household etc. is.

thank you all for the wonderful comments :)

I'm a terrier fan.. have three of them..an airedale.. a miniature fox terrier and a sydney silkie, and all of them think they are 10 foot tall and bulletproof..

I recommend terriers as being very hardy dogs..low maintenance, good with kids and great pest control in the garden.

regards Allie

We have a massive German Shepherd and eleven cats. The dog is a sweetheart and believe it or not, plays with the cats ... but God help you if you are in intruder entering our yard. All the cats were strays that we adopted ... ok, lets be more specific, I adopted them, brought them home, and whined my way for them to join our house. Stray cats just rock! They are so happy to have a home ... sometimes they are a little skittish, but after a while, they become at-home and make great pets. One of the cats we adopted was a pregnant stray. She had five kittens and three of them died of FKS. The other two ... I just couldn't let them go, so we kept them both. Believe it or not, the three of them (mother and two six month old kittens), actually sit on the top step of our pool ... in the water. I have never seen or heard of this before. It's pretty damn funny.

Before I answer the questions about MY dogs or read through the other posts (forgive me if I am being redundant ) Please, go to petfinder.com.

I recommend this site for two reasons.

#1 they have a short test you can take that will assess you and your lifestyle and tell you what breed type is best suited for you. Not for anyone else.

#2 you can go through all of the local shelter listings and see what they have that might suit you, call and see if the dog is still available, find out more about it and set up a time to visit it.

I agree completely - petfinder.com is probably your best resource for all of these reasons - and you'll find not only shelter listings, but also listing from every rescue organization, too.

I have had a few dogs of different types throughout my life.  Some were purebred and some were mutts.  I've had everything from a laid-back lab cross to a high energy heeler to a 70lb dalmatian pillow to a 7lb poodle warrior!   All but two of my dogs were either a rescue from the pound or brought home before they wound up there.  The only two who were not from the pound were from home breeders I knew personally.  I've loved every dog I've had.  I've mourned every one that is no longer with me.  Like so many here have said, it's so important to keep in mind your lifestyle and how you expect your dog to fit into it.  It's the only way you and the dog will be happy together.

By the way, my current 2 dogs (heeler & heeler/lab cross) are both rescues from individuals as is the cat - my horse is from a horse rescue organization

I have a friend who has two dogs.

One of them is a large male Doberman which is trained to hunt, gun dog, watch dog, etc.

They also have a dachsund.

Guess which is the alpha in their relationship.  It is the most hilarious thing to watch the dachsund get the doberman to get the dog treats from the counter.

Same went for Chloe (the whippet) and Sammy (the Grey). He was 3 times her size and could counter surf farther. He'd knock it down and she'd steal off with it. His poor sad face and slinking away always reminded me of Charlie Brown getting the football pulled out from under him.

My parents have a chocolate lab, Coco.  She is incredibly smart, we started to have to spell everything around her because she understood so well (God forbid i say "beach", or "pond" in a sentence) and now she knows the spellings too.  She's been trained with hand gestures and has boundless energy.  The chocolates are a little more hyper than the other labs and for longer (think puppy for 6 yrs).

She even knows i am submissive.  i put my foot on her paw, and she removes it and places her paw on top of my foot.  i keep telling her she's not "above" me because i can help myself to food whenever i want, but she continually insists (thru gestures and behaviours) that she's the top.

Funny how they know that stuff, huh?  I used to raise/train/show German Shepherd Dogs, and know that with big dogs one must socialize them well, and regularly let them know who is boss.  By this I mean, exert control: roll them over cuz YOU want to and scratch their tummies... occasionally walk up and take a bone or put your hand in their dish (NOT something to do with a new, adult dog).  The first time I tried to take a big ol' joint from my Akbash (beef joint, folks...sheeshhhhhhh), he held his head over it...very stiffly.  OMG  A dog this size is just too big to be pulling stunts like that; I grabbed him by the either side of his face and shook him a bit telling him NO! ...and then I took the bone.  I held it a bit and gave it back....and took it again.  Now we play that game a lot.

Still though, he's pretty Dom.  Especially when ya try to play ball or something like that, he just looks at me as if to say 'What?  YOU threw it away!  Why would you throw it away if you wanted it?'  He cracks me up.  Well, untill I call him.  He does come when he's called; as long as he's not busy.  If he gets out, he's gone...I swear he even looks back at me and laughs...  "See yaaaaaaaaaaa!!!"
