Debit cards secure hotels, flights etc over here. With these, you can only spend what's in your bank, unlike credit cards. I assumed the same is true in the US, maybe not.

It is. The problem is, if someone swipes your number, unlike a credit card, they get the money in your bank - poof - just like that, and you'll play hell trying to get it back.  Whereas with a credit card, you're not actually paying out of pocket and therefore you're not out any money while it's all getting sorted.

Actually with my Safe Credit union bank, any time I've had a fradulent charge, the monies been credited back to me in less than 5 days. It's extreamly easy to deal with SCU on any issues like that. It's why I love them, even though they're only local to Sacramento.

Well, at the risk of playing tit-for-tat, they don't get the money in your bank here, you're covered for the small fee of about a £5 one off charge, it's happened to me in the past and the bank refunded the stolen money no problem. They were good for their word, unlike an insurance company.

A car? I would never get into debt for a car. I've always saved for mine and as a last resort would rather buy an old banger than get into debt. Once you're in debt with the banks and loan companies, you're their property for them to pull the plug as they see fit. To each their own, but I wouldn't advise it.

when they started I used to use my card online to pay for bigger purchases I wanted right now but didn't wish to deplete my bank account for, like I said that's how it all started, sports stuff was being purchased on my card. first it was paypal, for stuff I didn't buy, like miami dolphin memorobilia, then Ross Dress for less started showing up.

This sounds a lot to me like you clicked on a pay pal phishing email once and logged into an insecure non-paypal location.  Lately even the new phishing ones call me by my real first and last name, which used to be how you told them apart.

Oh and just because it comes on the new bill, does not mean the old number wasn't used.  Please go change your paypal password immediately.

sexypet I never log into those pay pal things I know their scams.  I did change the pw though.
