At least the first several times you're experimenting with anal play, put down a nice firm pillow to go under your hips, and lay across it face down and just go totally limp and relaxed... You want to be hot and aroused already before starting this, that helps quite a bit also. Then lots of lube and gentle massage, but no penetration. The receptive partner should just be relaxing and enjoying. The active partner is touching and applying just a hint of pressure against the rosebud.
Gradually you'll relax and open up, then a well-lubed finger can be pressed inward slowly. You want it to go in a little and then hold still and let you get used to it, and you'll open more. As you relax and this starts to feel good, YOU start moving a bit to control the speed and depth, or ask your partner to proceed. More lube may need to be applied as this play continues, or a drop or two of water if you are using a water-based gel. Once the finger is feeling good, you can try for two or even three fingers, then once open and enjoying that, you can try a cock, or a toy.
As you get used to this kind of play, you'll learn to do a lot of the relaxing without so much coaxing and other positions can be experimented with, but to start with give yourself all the advantages for relaxation you can. Start small, and gradually move foward to more.
